PCOS, Regular Periods, Metformin & TTC

We've been TTC for baby #1 for a few years now with no success. I'm in my late 20s and partner in late 30s. I had a BMI of around 36 to begin with, now down to 30 and still going with the weight loss to get it down to 18-25.

I have PCOS but have had regular periods (every 28 - 32 days) for the past year, although they used to be incredibly irregular (anywhere from 26-75 days!) for the 2 years before that.

I'm not eligible for IVF as my partner has a DC from a previous relationship. I went to gynae about my PCOS and they didn't initially decide to prescribe metformin as my irregular periods have gone now that my weight is down but eventually decided to let me give it a try for a few months.

Has anybody ever taken metformin whilst having regular periods already? I've read lots about it helping women with PCOS who have irregular periods but haven't come across anything similar to my situation so wondering if there are any success (or unsuccessful!) stories of people taking it who already had a regular cycle.

Hi,
@ponlm . May I ask how your finding it? Iv just been prescribed it awaiting a IVF referral but my gp was very reluctant in prescribing it due to my regular periods and normal BMI and struggling to find any insight for people in my situation.

Hi! I'm finding actually taking it fine. Lots of side effects to begin with (bad stomach, nausea, exhausted) but they've all passed now. Unfortunately, still very much not-pregnant and looking to pay for treatment privately ASAP.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the metformin works wonders for you x

Have you tried inositol alongside metformin op? This along with Co-q10 supplement worked for me and was recommended by a private consultant when I got fed up with nhs gynae x

Hi @hopingfor23 . I haven’t started the Metformin yet. Iv taken a month off since finishing Letrozole and getting told we need IVF but I’m going to start it after.

I take Inositol and have done for a year now and assume it’s contributing to the regular periods but I’m really not sure if I take enough … there’s no real instruction for dose for pcos . I also take co enzyme q10 for the same time but recently upped the dose to 200mg as I was only taking 30mg it was probably no good. My consultant said not to take the Inositol with the Metformin as he said it does the same thing but with the nasty side affects, but Iv had no luck with Inositol alone and I know lots of people do both and I probably will too. I’m so pleased you found something that worked for you, thanks for the advice. Do you have PCOS too?

Hello, I’m a few months late to this thread but I was wondering what dosage of metformin and myoinositol you took when combining the two? I haven’t been given guidance and I’m not sure what to do. Thank you!
