Hi

I have a underactive thyroid and my latest blood test shows that my tsh is 6.6.

I have been told that a underactive thyroid can cause problems with the baby's development.

My thyroxine dose has been increased from 50mg to 75mg and I am to have another blood test done in 6 weeks to check my levels again.

Is anybody ttc with a underactive thyroid who can advise on whether it is okay to continue ttc with these levels.

I think you should be between 0.3 to 3.0
I have an underactive thyroid (treated) and personally I wouldn't ttc unless the levels were corrected

I believe there is a significantly increased risk of miscarriage if underactive thyroid is not properly treated before TTC.

This was also the experience of my mum.

You really need to be feeling well in addition to having a low TSH as it can sometimes take some experimentation with different medications (e.g.Thyroxine and Tertroxin) to get your enegy levels sorted out.

If you do get pregnant with a high TSH, I think the baby has it's own Thyroid gland quite early on (either 12 or 20 weeks, you can probably find more info on internet about what age). According to my endocrinologist from this point on the baby is fine, it's just you that will feel dreadful.

The bigger problem you may have heard of is if children have underactive thyroids as this can cause severe problems with development if untreated. However it's really really rare so early on and it is screened as part of heel prick test so it can be treated immediately.

Sorry if this sounds scary but I think you were asking for a straight answer. Hope it helps.
