Blood tests

Posted on the infertility board but posting on here too for traffic!

I’m 34 and been TTC #2 for about 10 months. Had two chemicals during that times.

I’ve been for some initial blood tests this morning and was surprised at how many things they’re testing.

Thyroid
Blood sugar
LH/FSH
Liver function
Kidney function
Something to do with lipids

And several more!

I was just expecting LH/FSH.

Obviously pleased they’re being thorough but just wondering what bearing all of the others could have on fertility.

Also what is the next stage if either there are issues with my bloods or if they are fine? The nurse wasn’t sure.

My GP does an annual blood test those sound like the sort of things she routinely tests for. It's a quick look under the bonnet to see how everything is ticking over.

I'm not sure how any of it directly affects fertility or if it does. But I guess if your over all health isn't good then that could be causing issues.

That makes sense. It does feel reassuring to have a bit of an overall health check (fingers crossed all ok!)

Hormone levels are a big part of fertility.

The thyroid gland regulates hormones and weight. Blood sugar testing will to help weed out things like diabetes and kidney and liver function testing is for checking for metabolic disorders.

The human body is bag of hormones. If a hormone isn't being produced, isn't being produced enough or too much of it is being produced, it can throw everything off.

@SarahShorty thank you that’s really helpful. My mum has an under active thyroid, not sure if it’s genetic but glad they’re including that in the testing too to rule it out.
