I'm new to this site, being trying to concieve for over two years. Dr says have to start tests soon. Done Ovulating tests, came up fine. Which oher tests are available without going into hospital, and how many times a week to you have to try to concieve? DH is happy to try twice a week, is this enough?

I was told by a doctor once that he learned in medical school that the number one reason for not conceiving was not enough sex. I would recommendmore than twice a week when you are ovulating.
Have you checked your dh's sperm count?

If you have been ttc for two years without success then there may be a problem with either one or both of you equally.

Two or three times a week throughout your cycle is fine.

If your GP wants to do some initial tests I would ask to be referred to a subfertility unit instead. You need to find out what the underlying problem/s is/are.

Once you are referred to a gynae subfertility unit practically all the tests are done there.

One lot of blood tests is not enough, more of these will need to be done as well as ultrasound scans. Semen analysis for your husband will need to be done as well to see if there are any male factor problems.

Initially at the unit they will talk to you about your medical histories, any previous operations you've had, particularly with reference to abdominal surgery like appendix removal.

Hi Lillybow

DH and I needed ivf to have our little boy - the tests we had prior to ivf were

semen analysis

day 21 blood test for me to check ovulation

cant remember the name but i had dye put through my tubes to check for blockages

they can also do post coital tests but we never had that done as all appeared fine with me but we discovered dh had a very low sperm count so it was ivf for us.

Good luck to you - i hope all works out ok.

Also, please make sure you question and understand everything you are being told. My dh had a vasectomy reversal to try and get me pregnant. After two sperm tests that told us that it had been unsuccessful. So we were all prepared to start ivf and another operation for dh and were days away from starting hormone shots when we discovered that I was pregnant. Doctor then told us that in fact he had only recommended that we move forward with ivf because we seemed like we were in a hurry to get pregnant (who isn't????). And that it does happen sometimes that the tubes reopen up after testing negative for sperm. (I still think they just messed up the tests and that dh had sperm all along). Any way, we also got pregnant with our second within 2 months of trying.
Good luck.
PS My cousins tried for years to get pregnant and then doctor put her for a few months on that hormone that stimulates ovulation and she has now had three kids without trouble.
