Can anyone clear up for me how many days after the first day of your period you are supposed to ovulate?? Ive been researching and have just read conflicting advice!

It's normally ten to fourteen days BEFORE your next period.

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:30

what if you dont come on same day every month? Do you have to go down the temp/mucus path? Not as simple as AFTER your last period?

OP posts:
ScaryHairy · 11/01/2008 21:32

No - not that simple I'm afraid, as the time from period to ovulation can change each cycle and varies from woman to woman.

For example, I normally ov 12 days before my next period, but have cycles from 28 to 34 days in length. So I ovulate on day 16 in some months and day 22 in others.

whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 21:33

Okay, so if you don't have a regular cycle it gets more difficult but because every woman is different it's silly to get hung up on X days pre or post period. Mucous secretions are a good indication, some people find temping useful, I never did.

Ovulation prediction kits can help some people too, but the best bet by far is to have sex every three days so there will always be sperm available when the egg shows up.

my mind boggles!! Isnt it just so amazing! Until you look into conception etc you dont realise how complex it is! I find it so special!

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 21:40

The best bit is, there is so much that can go awry, but then it just all works wonderfully and you get pregnant. It's an amazing process.

But enough of the awe - all you really need to do is have lots and lots of sex.

ScaryHairy · 11/01/2008 21:40

It is a little miracle.

WMMC is right, of course. The best thing is have sex every 2 to 3 days for a few months and see if anything happens.

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:42

Finding that difficult 2nd time round as cant really just get at it whenever/whereever the mood takes us! We arrange 'date nights' but dh is away midweek for next 4 weeks!!!

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 21:43

Turkey baster?

Maybe OPKs are for you then?

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:44

sorry, OPK??

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 21:47

Ovulation Predictor kits.

ScaryHairy · 11/01/2008 21:48

Ah, we have the same problem. My DH is away from Mon - Thurs (or sometimes Friday) every single week and has been for the past year.

I have spent a few cycles trying to figure out how to tell when I am ovulating to make sure that when he is home at the right time we make the most of it. But really it makes no difference knowing when I ovulate, because if he is away I can know I am hatching an egg as much as I like but it will not enable it to meet a sperm!

If your DH is only away for only the next 4 weeks, I would just have sex whenever possible during those weeks and then try a bit harder next time he is home for a stretch.

OracleInaCoracle · 11/01/2008 21:49

this is a fab calculator!

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:50

yeah i got some opks (sorry im new to the ttc game as last time was just 'lets go' kinda thing and got pg straight away) but bit confusing, said to count 9 days from the day of last period or something like that..

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 21:50

ScaryHairy - some sperm can survive a week - I conceived DD with week old sperm (we don't have sex a lot as you can tell so I could tell you exactly when we had it and exactly when the egg was released too because I was using OPKs). So there is hope if it's only four days!

ScaryHairy · 11/01/2008 21:54

Wow - I have heard a few stories about that happening but understand it is pretty rare.
Anyway this month's timing was perfect, so everything is firmly crossed this end!

Re opks - you start using them a few days before you think you will ovulate (so, for example, with a shortest cycle of 28 days I would probably start on day 9 or 10) and then hopefully you will catch your hormone surge.

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:55

LL that calender thing is GREAT! but as i dont come on same time at mo as stopped the pill 3 months ago and not sorted out yet which is naffing me off! Also do you count first day of period the light bleeding 'here it comes' or when your fully bleeding?

OP posts:
dd666 · 11/01/2008 21:57

it all varies i tend to ovulate between cd 9-16 hth and i have fairly regular cycle 28-30 days

mad4mybaby · 11/01/2008 21:59

you know when you say 'day 9' is that 9 days from first day of last period? Im so sorry if im being a pleb

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 11/01/2008 22:00

Yes first day of bleed - however heavy.

OracleInaCoracle · 11/01/2008 22:01

spotting doesnt count tho. its the first day of bleeding

ScaryHairy · 11/01/2008 22:03

Me? By day 9 I mean 9 days from the first day of your last period = CD (cycle day) 9.

CD1 is the first day of your period.

If you have a shortest cycle of 28 days (counting from the first day of your period) then if you start using OPKs on around CD 9 you will probably be early enough to catch ovulation, as ov is most likely to happen 10-16 days before your next period (i.e. between CD 12 and CD 18 in a 28 day cycle).
