Period started when I was 9. Will this effect my fertility?

I started my period 2 weeks before my 10th birthday. I’ve always had a regular 28 day cycle and no other gynae issues as far as I am aware. I am currently 10 months into TTC our first baby and so far we’ve had no luck. Im now nearly 26 as as far as I’m aware fit and healthy.

I’m starting to wonder if the age I started my period has/will be effecting my fertility? Understandably it can take up to a year and beyond and I’m now gearing myself up for a chat with my GP. But I’m just wondering if anyone could share any thoughts or personal experiences?

Why would it? I started my period aged ten I have never heard of that causing a problem with fertility? I'm nearly 30 and have been pregnant once but lost it two years ago. Am as hoc trying again now but no luck so far but it's a long process for some.

Is there a particular reason you think there may be a link?

DaftyLass · 10/05/2022 20:36

Not that I am aware of

RebeccaCloud9 · 10/05/2022 20:39

I started when I hadn't long turned 11 - so not as early as you but still quite early. I've got pregnant 3 times, first month of trying every time. Currently 39 and Pg, and older age didn't affect how long it took to get Pg - so it hasn't been like I've had less time 'the other end'.

Why do you assume you are the reason you aren’t conceiving?

RebeccaCloud9 · 10/05/2022 20:42

Sorry posted too soon. There are so many things that can affect your fertility but starting youngish hasn't for me, and I haven't heard that be an issue for others either. Fingers crossed for you and hope you get some answers and/or a bfp soon!

Useranon1 · 10/05/2022 20:53

No. I assume you're thinking it means you'd run out of eggs early? But don't worry, that's not true.

Do you have regular periods though? The earlier you start puberty, the less likely your cycle is to be regular.

Quornflakegirl · 10/05/2022 20:58

I also started at nine and had twins in our first month of trying so it definitely didn’t effect my fertility. I do however wonder if it’s why I started peri menopause quite early.

Thanks for your reply! I’ve got great periods actually! Regular 28 day cycle, slight cramping for 1/2 days but nothing unusual.

I’m not saying it does I’m just genuinely intrigued as there isn’t a lot of research out there. Hope you get your BFP soon ☺️

I think naturally as I woman it’s normal to ‘blame’ yourself when these things don’t happen straightaway. And I was just genuinely curious to see others opinions on early periods as it’s not something in my life people have spoke about.

I started around a similar time and had my children at 37 and 40. Dc1 was conceived on month one, dc2 took slightly longer but not by much. At almost 45 my periods are as regular as ever and I have no peri menopause symptoms.

Good luck

ofwarren · 10/05/2022 21:32

I started at 9 and have 3 kids and 1 miscarriage.
Each time I tried to get pregnant, it happened quickly. The first one month, the second in 5 months and the 3rd and 4th pregnancies happened on first try.

My last pregnancy was at age 40, I'm now 42 with no signs of menopause.

5zeds · 10/05/2022 21:33

I don’t think it’s natural to blame yourself if you have no reason to think you aren’t fertile. It takes two. It seems illogical to jump to conclusions.

CorpusCallosum · 10/05/2022 21:33

Sorry it's taking some time TTC is an emotional rollercoaster, especially for your first, I hope it happens for you soon.

Anecdotally, I started periods at 10. DCs at 31 & 34 conceived fairly quickly both times. Have wondered if I'll go through menopause a bit early but no signs of it yet bar a few chin hairs.

AcceptYourself · 10/05/2022 21:37

I've also wondered about this before. I started age 9 as well or possibly younger - was in year 4 at school. Took a year to conceive the first time (age 31) and now pregnant again at 33 and that happened quickly. So only my experience but it didn't seem to affect things Smile and you're much younger x
