HSG 😰

I've got a HSG booked this week, and have stupidly googled it. I get myself worked up over smear tests (though they usually end up being quite straightforward). The hospital is over an hour away, and I do have someone to drive me, but nobody to go in the hospital with me, and I'm quite petrified. I've got a diazepam to take and have read that paracetamol/ibuprofen is a good idea too. Are they completely awful?
Not sure if it makes any difference, I have given birth before (dilated to 10cm but needed an emcs). I'm on the verge of cancelling the appointment..

Hi @Malzzy ,

Didn't want to read and run- I've not had one but I have read up on them a bit and it does seem completely divided. Some people say they're awful, some people say they couldn't feel anything.

I know it's scary but if it's something you need to have done I wouldn't cancel it based on these divided opinions, plus I've heard they don't take long. Xx

Thankyou- yes it seems very 50/50 as to whether they hurt or not. I really don't mind some cramping or whatever (I did go through labour afterall), I think it's just the 'thought' around it, and the whole tube going through my cervix thing. The brush during a smear test although doesn't hurt, is enough to make me feel sick! In 24 hours though, it should be done 😰 It's consuming me so much I've not even thought that they could be giving me bad news about tube blockges or scar defects.

@Malzzy I pass out for blood tests and generally hate being in hospital. I really didn't feel it. I promise it's fine. At worst, if you're not lucky like me, you'll have some bad period type cramps, but very short lived. Just get it over with. You won't have one booked if you didn't need to tick it off.

oooh yep that's me too- I'm a fainter for blood tests! the worst thing is that the only orher person I know that's had it done (years ago) I vividly remember her describing the agony. So the fear of it has lived with me for a while 😣

Incase anyone stumbles on this thread- it went fine. The speculum was by far the worst bit of it, and she took that out before all the dye went in. I took some ibuprofen and paracetamol before hand, and felt no cramping or anything. Both tubes filled and spilled though (one much faster than the other). All in all uncomfortable but not at all painful.

So glad it went okay for you @Malzzy and thank you for letting us know how the procedure is. Is it just like a speculum they use for cervical screening?

That's great news about your tubes being clear! You must feel so relieved xx

I had mine today! It was absolutely fine, took paracetamol/ibuprofen 1 hour beforehand and didn't feel any cramping during or after the procedure. I got myself really worked beforehand from too much googling.
But it was fine, so anyone waiting for it try not too worry. Its the first invasive test in our infertility journey but first step done!!!
