Faint Positive?

Went to the doctor this morning for a pregnancy test. Bit confusing as I had bleeding on Fri, very faint, heavier on Saturday and a wee bit more on Sunday and then it stopped. The test came up as a faint positive. The doctor said that this could happen around the time of your period. I'd never heard of a possible false positive, thought you could only have false negatives. Anyone else been told this? If pregnant I'd only be just over 4 weeks and I have no recognisable symptoms, just rather tired. Feel a bit weird as I've never tested this early before, its always been 6-7 weeks. Going back to docs on Fri 3rd. Don't want to tell dh till I have some proper news.

Eulalia

Have you done your own test? I tested at 10dpo (days post ovulation) and had a faint positive.

Am now 15 weeks pregnant so it was obviously correct

i had a strong positive when I did a Boots own brand test at home, then a faint positive the next day at the GPs - so sometimes their tests aren't as accurate as the over the counter ones! first response, boots own and clearblue digital seem to get the thumbs up on here if you do want to do a test at home, rather than wait till you are back at the docs.

Hi Eulalia

I think maybe your doctor is talking about the fact that a lot of early conceptions do not develop properly and an 'early miscarriage' is just like a normal period if you don't know you're pregnant.

So I would think you have conceived as you can't get a false positive but your hcg levels need to continue to rise and it will be easier to tell in a few days time

good luck

pregnancy tests are sensitive to hcg, a hormone that is only produced by fertilised eggs. so i think your doctor is talking nonsense if he/she says that having you period can cause a false positive. i agree you can get false negatives but not false positives. it's quite normal to get bleeding around the time of your period, i had this when pregnant with ds & went on to have a very unremarkable pregnancy. so this is a long winded way of saying i think you probably are pregnant. congratulations!

You CAN get what the doc means as a false positive in as much as the egg may not of implanted and it is classed as easrly miscarriage sadly. Good luck at your next appt.

Thanks. I did have similar bleeding with dd (2nd pregnancy) but not with my first. The bleeding was around the time for my period and I thought I'd had one till I got preg symptoms later on. dd was a big healthy baby. I am kind of assuming that this is the same thing. Surely if it was an early miscarriage I would be bleeding now? Anyway this is speculation. I'll either buy a test or wait... part of me doesn't want to know yet but then again maybe I should try and get my Christmas shopping done before the nausea kicks in!
