Too old

Is 33 to old to have a baby? My partner said basically we're too old, we have a 17 year old and he said we might aswell wait for our grandchildren now because he thinks it's weird that they could possibly be the same age or ours being younger.

Is that a typo?! 53 is probably too old. 43 is worth a bit of a think, but 33 is a spring chicken!

Sexnotgender · 10/04/2022 21:04

No of course not, that’s ridiculous.

Figgygal · 10/04/2022 21:05

33?
No
33 with a 17 year old still no

Lifesonebigparty · 10/04/2022 21:09

It's not old no but my sister had gee first at 15. That baby had a baby at 20 and my sister became a grandmother at 35. So I personally wouldn't start again but no, definitely not old. Smile

Newbiemg · 10/04/2022 21:12

@Mummyto4beautys Absolutely not too old! My sisters eldest is 16 and youngest just turned 1. Eldest is great with the youngest. Doesn’t seem odd at all.

I’m 30 and ttc baby number 1 and I want more than 1.

Do what feels right for you Smile

No I don't.

Of course not. But that’s a massive age gap between children and he might feel too old which would be fair enough.

We've also got a 15,7 and 3 year old.

I was about to say that the only thing that would give me pause for thought would be the age gap and idea of starting again. But you have a three year old!

Of course it’s not too old. But there may be other reasons why your partner doesn’t want a fourth child. Is “too old” his way of saying “I’m done”?

Chlo1995 · 10/04/2022 21:26

Definitely not too old! My sister in law is 33 and is 14 weeks with her first!

It would be our 5th, 2 of them are his step Children. Maybe he is done but he keeps making hints about wanting another.

I was talking about birth choices for DC2 and the midwife was talking about c-section risks with subsequent pregnancies. I said ‘not a problem, we’re two and done’ and she laughed and said ‘you’re far too young to make that decision yet, you’ve easily got 10 - 15 years left to make that call!’ I’m 32 Confused so if my midwife thinks it’s still young for childbearing it’s still young!

ApolloandDaphne · 11/04/2022 03:14

It's not too old at all but you already have 4 children so I would guess the conversation really needs to be about if you can cope with and afford a fifth rather than your age.

0infp0 · 11/04/2022 03:44

No, I only started at 33

starrynight21 · 11/04/2022 03:48

33 isn't too old, but I can understand that he might mean he just doesn't want any more, you've already got 4.

TulipsGarden · 11/04/2022 03:58

33 is a very average age to have your first, but four children is a lot. That might be more the issue than your age. Don't you want to do something else with your life now, given that you got pregnant at 16?

BlueForgetMeNot · 11/04/2022 04:24

33 is deff not too old at all. Many ladies are having children in there 40s too. Go for it OP

Jobsharenightmare · 11/04/2022 04:24

You've been having babies since you were 16 so I guess it's all you've ever known before you were even an adult. As PP said, maybe he's thinking it's time for a different focus in your lives now?

Figgygal · 11/04/2022 09:08

Massive dripfeed there op
Is 33 too old to have kids no but really is 4 not enough? What is a 5th going to do for you other than maybe think i could still fit in a 6th or 7th as still have time.

gogohm · 11/04/2022 09:19

You have 4 kids - you are not too old but you already have a lot of kids, your partner is saying enough! How about thinking about things you can do now you don't have an infant? I'm guessing your identity is just mum, who else do you want to be? You'll be 50 ish when the youngest reaches independence, you will then appreciate having a life beyond kids. Plus how can you afford more?

Grin laughing at raspberry slinking off, I'm not far behind you! I think it's fine OP, 33 is still young Smile

So obviously 33 is not too old. Unless you're feeling tired, broken and battered by life and bringing up your other kids. It's not about being old, it's about your family set-up and context, which is very different to many energetic FTM's at 33. Do you feel too past the baby stage? Ie: too old!?
