Just been to the doctor today and all my blood test results are good in fact the doctor says I am fertile. I'm not menopausal, not even perimenopausal; FSH of 9.5, LSH of 6.4 Progesterone 21 days result confirms ovulation; regular cycle and I could go on and on and on....bottom line is my body is able to get pregnant but I just need a good egg. Of course I know that the quality of my eggs is questionable and to use the doctors workds even though I'm ovulating its a lottery as to whether a good egg is released. My husband believes that I will get pregnant. Oh I have a son of 21. I've read success stories of women over 40 but know that of course they are not the norm. Anyone have any experiences to share with me to keep me believing???

Hi keepbelieving,

My friend had a baby last year at 43. Homebirth, no drugs, lovely baby girl.

I had my first baby at 40 and am now 41 and have had two more pregnancies but miscarried.

If you are keen you might as well try. You have a greater chance of problems but still statistically you are more likely to have a healthy baby than not I believe.

Good luck!

expatinscotland · 08/01/2008 15:54

Best of luck.

My grandmother fell accidentally pregnant - she thought she was menopausal - with her 6th child at 47 and delivered a healthy son at home who is now a physician.

expatinscotland · 08/01/2008 15:55

She had her first child at 16 by her first husband, was widowed and lost the child to Spanish Flu epidemic when she was 18, and then didn't have any more children until she was 31. She had 4 in her 30s.

Don't have any advice/news but just wanted to wish you all the best - fingers crossed for you.

fryalot · 08/01/2008 16:01

don't have any real advice, but dp's mum was (I think) 48 when she fell pg with him. He was a much loved and got on very well with his nieces and nephews - most of whom are older than him.

Good luck and keep on believing,

Good luck! I am 43 and would love another. Have one DS (6) conceived through IVF. Had IVF in Oct 2006 but not successful.

Next period I will have FSH levels tested to see how that is and I may try another course of IVF.

I have added complications that I am very overweight. Am trying to do something about that!

jalopy · 08/01/2008 18:04

Good luck

becaroo · 08/01/2008 18:18

Good luck

TheRedQueen · 08/01/2008 18:36

A friend of mine had her first at 44 and her second at 47 with no "bother" whatsoever. So it does happen!

Best of luck!

cinnamontam · 08/01/2008 18:37

Just wanted to wish you good luck as well

Nancy66 · 08/01/2008 19:06

Good luck to you.
I think you have the right attitude.
The odds are stacked against you but if you keep trying and hope for the best, well who knows? My friend and neighbour conceived last year at 44, gave birth at 45 to a gorgeous and healthy little boy. There are some very fertile women in their 40s.
Keep us informed.

didoreth · 08/01/2008 20:33

Good luck!
I'm 46 and 24 weeks pregnant with my second child - conceived without too much difficulty, took six months (and, because of work, only saw DP at weekends for the first 4 months of that - living together all the time clearly helped!). Everything has gone smoothly so far, though I am finding the bump seems a lot heavier than I remember from DD1 at this stage - I think I've mislaid my abdominal muscles somewhere in the last 23 years.
Your hormone levels sound great, so you could be lucky. As you say, you only need one good egg!

didoreth · 08/01/2008 20:38

Oh and forgot to add - my midwife told me she's currently seeing two women older than me!

Wags · 08/01/2008 22:38

I was almost 42 when I had DD. I was going through an early menopause and my FSH was 12. The specialist said it was unlikely I would fall pregnant naturally and sent me off with Clomid. Never took it, was pregnant a month later. He was suprised and pleased! Then fell pregnant with DS when DD was just over a year old. Had him 6 months before my 44th birthday. Not sure what FSH levels etc were like then as I had no further tests. If I thought I was lucky with DD, then DS was a little miracle I think. Hope it all works out for you. No reason why it shouldn't.

Hi Keepbelieving. I had my 3rd son at 44 after a 12 yr age gap. He's now 2. Getting pregnant was easy (2 months) and I felt fit and healthy all the way through. In the toddlers group I go to 7 mums out of about 13 are mid forties. There's lots of people doing it

mumemma · 08/01/2008 23:17

I read about Annie Leibowitz the photographer having her first child at 51, conceived naturally I think. She later went onto have twins by surrogate.

Good luck - I hope you get pregnant and sail through to a happy and healthy birth.

mumemma · 08/01/2008 23:18

Leibovitz even.

christie1 · 09/01/2008 00:30

I am 44 and pregnant, conceived naturally. Good luck!

keepbelieving · 09/01/2008 09:25

Go for it. I was 43 when I had my DD in Dec 06. I conceived in a month and hadn't ever tried before. What a shock! Now I'm pg again after a month of trying and expecting my second at 44. No sickness either time and the first pg was trouble-free. Just expect it to happen and it will.

MrsFlora · 10/01/2008 23:21

leolo, is your name based on a film?

leolo · 11/01/2008 07:03

No, it was the name of my (sadly, recently departed) cat. A film of his life would be great though

wantslotsofbabies · 11/01/2008 20:22

I'm 47 and just had my third baby. Eldest is 25. Natural conception. Trouble free pg. It is lovely being a mum again. Good luck!

jenjins · 11/01/2008 20:27

All sounds amazing! Good luck ...

evenhope · 11/01/2008 20:37

I had my DD2 2 months before I turned 44. She was an "instant" baby conceived while we were wondering whether to ttc following 2x mmc. I actually got pg 3 times at 42-43

DD1 took us 18 months to conceive when I was 20....
