Progesterone for recurrent miscarriage

trinity198 · 21/03/2022 09:43

Just wondering if anyone has had any success with using progesterone for recurrent miscarriage? I've been through all of the rm tests and everything has come back fine but slight polycystic ovary on one side. I've been prescribed progesterone for next time.

I have also read It Starts With An Egg and am currently taking a load of vitamins recommended in there. These are methyl folate, myoinositol, uquibinol, NAC, alpha lipoic acid, omega 3, vita b6, b12, E, C and vitamin D3.

Hoping a combination of vita and progesterone might do the trick but I'm not hopeful!

I had two MCs and took progesterone from a couple of days after ovulation until I was 12 weeks and I’m currently 39 weeks pregnant! Good luck!!!

trinity198 · 21/03/2022 11:45

@Gamechanger2019 that's great to hear! Will be with you anytime now then ☺️ I've been told to start as soon as I get a BFP but I've seen others say they started from a few days post ovulation. I have a meeting with another consultant tomorrow so I might ask his advice. I'm 1dpo now so shouldn't be too late to start if that's what he recommends. Thanks for sharing!

I was prescribed it after 2 miscarriages and my cycle not regulating afterwards. End of first cycle, my period failed to start as I was assured it should so I thought I was still having cycle issues... DS turns 10 next month.

AnAussieMum · 21/03/2022 16:20

I had had 2 mc on my 3rd pregnancy started the pessaries as soon as soon as I found out I was pregnant shes now 11.
I also have 2 other daughters and needed the progesterone pessaries with them also

My progesterone levels were very low with all pregnancies. Thankfully the pessaries did the trick and I now have 3 beautiful daughters.
Good luck op!

trinity198 · 21/03/2022 19:53

@DennisSkinnersMolotov @AnAussieMum thank you for your stories, Its great to hear you've had your successful pregnancies!

It's just hard to stay positive when you're going through it isn't it. I just have down days somethings when I need a bit of success stories to lift my mood!

Thanks ladies ☺️

Hi! I am a bit late to this thread but I just wanted to add my own journey here:
I have had two MMC over the last two years, both times the baby stopped developing at 5-6 weeks but I had no indication anything was wrong until a scan revealed the problem. With my last pregnancy, I pushed my GP for a progesterone check and it revealed that although my progesterone was the low end of normal range, there had been a significant dip between the first blood test on the Monday and the second blood test on Wednesday. I was prescribed progesterone and started straight away but unfortunately I think it was already too late. It was no ones fault - the GP moved as quickly as they could in the circumstances and I requested the tests as soon as I found out I was pregnant. All that being said, this time my consultant at the fertility clinic suggested that I start progesterone from 3 DPO and continue until at least 15dpo. At that point she said to take a pregnancy test and if it is negative, I should stop taking the pessaries and wait for my period. If it is positive, I should keep taking the pessaries until around 12 weeks.

Good luck @trinity198 Please let me know how you are getting on :) xx

trinity198 · 21/04/2022 13:04

@PCOSWarrior thank you so much for your reply. I'm hoping that progesterone will help fox my issues too. I have only been prescribed it from a positive pregnancy test though so hopefully it will still be ok.

I have also been prescribed sitagliptin from the Coventry clinic which I have been taking for the last 2 months max the hope is that this will help with stem cells in the womb.

Didn't conceive last cycle but currently 1 DPO so fingers crossed we will be lucky this month! Have you had any success since starting progesterone?

Hana89 · 21/04/2022 13:25

Ooo! I'm 1dpo today too!
This is my first Clomid cycle since the MMC in January so I've got my progesterone on standby for Saturday!
I've also gone Gluten Free because of all the tests I have had for antibodies and other grizzly things, the only slight marker I had was for celiac disease and I was only borderline for that so perhaps it is just a mild allergy for me, but after doing some research and reading testimonies of other women, I decided to go GF and see if maybe that can give me a better chance too!

I'll keep everything crossed for both of us! Bring on the January babies!!!

Hana89 · 21/04/2022 13:27

Ps. I just changed my username from PCOSWarrior! I've had that one for so long and it feels a bit silly after all this time! Haha!

trinity198 · 21/04/2022 13:41

@Hana89 o have also gone gluten free! Started this after my last loss in January. It was a pain at first but feel like I've gotten used to it now. I've also majorly cut back on sugar and dairy too. I can't believe how much of a difference it has made, I feel so much less bloated and sluggish. I'm hoping that really makes a difference too!

Yep definitely hoping this can be both our months! I think I just feel loads better after making lots of changes and feeling more positive about things now ☺️

I also had a successful pregnancy using progesterone after 4 miscarriages.

Good luck! X

trinity198 · 21/04/2022 19:42

@SophieSoSo aww lovely, great to hear success stories and thanks for sharing! Really hope it will be my time soon! X

@trinity198 That is so good! I really struggle with sugar cravings and over Easter I've really taken two steps back so I am trying to get back on the waggon! I'm also trying to increase my calorie intake a bit, but with the right sort of food - lots of lean protein! I so hope it works out for us!

@SophieSoSo This is so wonderful to hear! Thank you for sharing your good news :)

trinity198 · 25/04/2022 11:03

@Hana89 I agree, sugar cravings are the hardest to deal with! I'm just getting back on the wagon after a bad week food wise. Just want the tww to be over, it's the worst part of the month. Just wanna find out if I'm pregnant or not and move on 😂

Angrymum22 · 25/04/2022 11:07

It worked for me. The result is now a strapping 6’3” grumpy teenager.
I had multiple miscarriages, mainly chemical pregnancies but two made it to 6weeks.
I had endometriosis and secondary PCOs ( I have a soft pituitary which puts all my hormones out of sync).

Angrymum22 · 25/04/2022 11:08

should read dodgy pituitary

trinity198 · 25/04/2022 11:33

@Angrymum22 thanks for replying with your story. It's great to hear of other peoples success stories. Was it just the progesterone which you did differently?

Sounds like PCOS sends hormones out of whack, just trying to do everything I can to restore my body 🤞

Hi @trinity198
I'm in the exact same boat as you and I’ve been on a health kick since January before we start trying again. I’ve just been reading about the wonders of B6 and B3 for helping prevent miscarriage. I’m very interested in the book you mentioned so I’m going off to buy it just now! I would be very glad to hear of any other ideas you may have also. It’s been a hard journey but I’m sure you will understand all about that

trinity198 · 25/04/2022 12:25

@Fightingbackwithhappiness yes I've heard a lot about B6 and am taking that as well.

The book is great. There's a lot of chapters about using plastics in the home and the types of toiletry products we use which could have an impact. I understand where they are coming from but have chosen to leave that but as it seems a bit far fetched. But the other chapters are great and explain things clearly for anyone who doesn't come from a medical background.

I've heard the Mediterranean diet is great for recurrent miscarriage, it's just difficult if you're also doing gluten free and cutting out dairy and sugar too!

It really is an awful journey and so much harder than I ever imagined. I really hope is and anyone else going through it gets there eventually. I hate to think of anyone experiencing this pain

OP posts:
Fightingbackwithhappiness · 25/04/2022 12:38

Hi
thanks for that, I will keep it in mind. Have down loaded it so I will listen to it later on.
I’m vegan for many years but my husband and I were total junk food vegans! I was never happy about this so this new diet has been so good for us both and we’ve cut out most processed food, reduced gluten and sugar a lot and seriously upped our fruit and veg intake! Annoyingly though, It’s not helping me to shift the 1&1/2 stones I wish to lose! So I’m wondering about doing vegan keto? Not sure how important a good diet is compared with being slightly over weight?

Yes it’s been a truly eye opening and heart breaking experience. I had a missed miscarriage last October (baby had died at 6 weeks and I had no idea) and we were both just devastated.
Miscarriage has taken me to lows that I didn’t know I would be able to come back up from but somehow, I have. Exploring nutrition and vitamins as a preventative has given me hope and helped me get through.

trinity198 · 25/04/2022 18:23

@Fightingbackwithhappiness yeah I heard vegan diet is good for fertility as long as you get your b12. I've been taking that vitamin too because I probably only eat meat about once a week.

I'm sorry to hear that. Mine was similar, we saw a heartbeat at 6 weeks but then at 9 weeks it had passed. It must have stopped beating right after we saw it.

I think I'm trying to rely on vitamins and nutrition more so than medicine. It's hard to believe any medicine will help when miscarriages have been an issue for so long. Might try look for a fertility cook book as I struggle with meal ideas

OP posts:
Fightingbackwithhappiness · 26/04/2022 07:02

@trinity198
yeah definitely getting B12.
Oh gosh I’m so sorry to hear that. You must have been heart broken. It’s so hard to come back from something like that but it sounds like you are doing really well and taking control where you can.

My older sister had the worst time conceiving and she miscarried several times and even had an ectopic pregnancy 😢. She was left with only ovary and a broken heart. She fought back though, She changed her diet, took supplements and she went for reflexology. She was one month away from starting IVF and then discovered she was pregnant! That was 11 years ago. Her story give me hope!
I’m 38 now and I’m trying not to get to hung up on my age as it’s not helpful. my main goal at the moment is to actually just feel happy again and get into the best frame of mind and so far it’s going okay!
thanks for the book recommendation, it’s making a lot of sense so far :)

Palease · 26/04/2022 07:12

It worked for me. After 2 MCs and 2 years TTC I was prescribed to take it from ovulation and that same month I got pregnant with my now 1 year old. I could not believe it.

I had also been taking DHEA as advised in ISWTE (after checking hormones via online blood testing service - medichecks) so I wonder if this helped too.

Hana89 · 26/04/2022 07:46

Hi @Palease please may I ask what DHEA is? I can decode It Starts With The Egg, but DHEA has me stumped! Haha!
