Can you ovulate with only two follicles in the ovary?

I have just been for a scan and I have five follicles in one ovary and two in the other. Can I ovulate if there are only two follicles?

Of course! You start off your cycle with a varying number of follicles. As they develop one will become more dominant and send signals to the others to essentially "fuck off" (sometimes they don't, that's how you get diozygotic twins!), And the dominant one continues to develop until it's mature enough to release an egg. Even just one follicle means you have a chance at conception, I wouldn't worry and good luck!

Thank you so much! That’s a relief.

In that case, do you know why are fewer follicles considered a ‘bad thing’ in terms of fertility? If you only need one?

Potentially because the more follicles you have, the better chance you have at having one mature and release an egg. Just because you have follicles doesn't means any of them will mature (I think, this is based on my own knowledge, if I'm wrong someone please correct me).

Besides, you don't have just 2, you have 7! There's a good chance at least one of those will mature and release an egg. If you're very concerned though maybe you could try temping as it's the only real way to know if you've ovulated!

Ah ok! My day 22 progesterone level was 30-something and I have temped a few months and each month they do go up after ovulation like the should. So hopefully all is ok. The follicle count just scared me a little! Thanks so much for taking time to reply Smile

How old are you, OP?

Andreax4 · 11/03/2022 17:13

39...

That doesn't seem like an unusual number of follicles then.

It only takes one after all...

Ah, the numbers vary by age? I learn something every day! What is considered ok for 40 do you know?

Yes, the number of follicles gets smaller as you get older. So if you were 25 and you had that many then it wouldn't be great but at 39 it's probably quite normal (and of course 39 year olds can and do get pregnant all the time). It's normal to have more on one side than on the other as well.
