IVF on the NHS for second baby after private IVF for first?

Hi everyone, our beautiful daughter was conceived through IVF and ICSI and is now 19 months old. Due to my mum being terminally ill at the time we decided to pay for the treatment ourselves to speed the process along in the hope that she’d be able to meet our baby. Sadly she didn’t but she did know that I was pregnant and expecting a girl.

We have decided we’d like to try for number 2 but we are fully expecting to have to go down the IVF route again. Does anyone know if you can have IVF on the NHS if you have previously paid for a private round? And will they insist that you try naturally for a certain amount of time even though we had to IVF previously?

A lot of regions won’t allow IVF on the NHS if one/both parents already have a child.

I’m fairly sure you can’t have NHS IVF if either partner already has a baby by whatever means.

Unfortunately most nhs trusts will not offer you fertility treatment if you or your partner already have a living child. My nhs trust also takes any private ivf rounds off of your nhs entitlement when trying for a first child.

No I don’t think so unfortunately, from memory if you already had a child this automatically meant that you couldn’t access any ivf on the NHS (but I’m willing to be corrected on this)

Good luck for the future, i went through 5 x rounds so know how gruelling it is xx

When we had NHS ivf they definitely asked (many times) if either of us already had a child.

I don’t think if we did we’d have been eligible, no matter whether it was through ivf or not.

As others even though you had IVF previously they'll count it as a living child so won't be eligible.

You probably won't need to try again for x amount of years to be referred if you have a diagnosis from the private clinic, your GP should be able to refer straight away from your records.

Could be worth emailing/ringing your local clinic and asking.

Just to add, I have my first DC on NHS IVF, but need to pay for my next round.

If you have any fertilised eggs left over from your first round of IVF, it won't be as expensive to try again privately.

An ex-colleague of mine was able to access free IVF when she already had a child in exchange for donating some of her eggs. Might not necessarily be for everyone of course but an option.

CharlotteRose90 · 10/01/2022 08:36

Sadly you won’t get free ivf if you’ve got a child already. Could be worth checking but personally if they allowed it it would be wrong in my eyes.

Nope

Unless you are in Ireland I believe you can get secondary infertility treated on the NHS there

There are no wait times in terms of trying for a minimum number of months/years when you go private
