False positive ovulation test? PCOS

Purplerain1144 · 08/01/2022 09:42

Hi
I have PCOS so have read can get high LH levels throughout the cycle. I did my first ever ovulation test yesterday on CD8 and its come up really high. I feel like this is probably due to my PCOS as I normally get EWCM in another 10 days. Does anyone have any advice or experience? Is it a waste of time using the tests?

Hi,
I have PCOS and spent 4 years TTC.
Please throw the ovulation sticks away as they aren't accurate. They caused me so much upset and anxiety. It was only when I went to a fertility clinic they told me they were completely useless.
Have you tried tracking your temperatures?
Sending lots of love as I know how hard it is.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 08/01/2022 10:02

I agree. For people with hormone disruption they are useless. My body tries to ovulate many times before it either succeeds or gives up and has a period. As a result over 2 years ttc I've never seen a positive OPK but lots of them getting stronger or weaker at varying times. Waste of time and money for me!

Thanks both posters. I thought this may have been the case :( will be getting referred next month to fertility clinic so hopefully they will have some answers for us!

I actually have a conflicting opinion 🙈

For me ovulation testing has been accurate and not only is it for ttc purposes but has been massively helpful in helping me know when my period is due (always 14-15days after poisitive opk). Also I use the easy@home brand and they have been very accurate of my peak (your picture is an amazingly strong positive)

I have been taking a long list of supplements that I honestly feel have helped with my pcos as my periods have gone from completely irregular (anywhere between 30-115 days), the past 5 cycles have been 34-38 days giving more chances in the year to ttc

Basically I believe everyone is different. Try using opks and a tracker app for 6months to a year (especially if you have irregular cycles) if you find your period isn't coming at least 2 weeks after your peak or you get many/no peaks in a cycle, then opks aren't for you. But maybe you might be like myself where they are accurate for you. Worth a try 🤷🏼‍♀️

Good luck!

@beanchopper17 would you be willing to share what supplements you take? I have cycles 45-141 days and would love to try anything to normalise these.

Did OPKs work for you even when your cycles were super long?

Ok I will list below what I take, I do recommend though doing some research because of the different types of pcos (I have insulin resistant pcos) I highly recommend the group on face book 'healthy PCOS' they started my intrigue into doing some research.

Myo-inositol - 4000mg - highly recommend myova from Amazon it's £32 a bottle and needs topping up monthly, but I have tried other brands and this is the one I see most difference with
N-acetyl-cysteine (nac) - 600mg - again myova from Amazon are good
Vit C - 1000mg
Vit D - 25ug
Vit B complex and B12
Turmeric - good for inflammation of any type
Berberine - (you shouldn't take this long term, so please make sure you read up on this first)
Omega fish oil
Liquorice root - again not a long term supplement, this is mainly for reducing testosterone

Also to help with my hair loss (due to pcos and high testosterone)
Saw palmetto
Biotin

I know this is a long (and expensive) list (if you can wait till Holland and Barrett have their buy one and get one for a penny a sale you will save some pennies, but some of them are not available in H&b, like Myo-instisol, nac, berberine)

Out of the above my must haves are

Must have - Myo-inositol
NAC
Must have - Vit C/D
Berberine (for the short term)
Biotin (only cause I have noticed my hair and nails are stronger)

Again I can't stress enough please read up on these and see if they actually meet your needs, maybe talk to you GP especially if you have other health conditions and also FYI some of these should not be taken once you do fall pregnant (berberine, liquorice root, omega oil)

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck with your referral. I wasted so much money on ovulation sticks TTC DD. In ln my experience, they were rubbish. In the end, i had to go down the medical route - metformin + 3 cycles of letrozole worked for us. Wishing you all the best Flowers
TheDaydreamBelievers · 10/01/2022 21:28

@beanchopper17 thank you! Honestly, I have no idea what the deal is with me. Androgens are fine. No cysts or any atypicalities on scans. Just... no ovulating. And some soft signs of dysfunction - hair loss and oily

beanchopper17 · 10/01/2022 21:28

@TheDaydreamBelievers I forgot to say, yes opk's still worked for me even on my mega long cycles, at some points peeing on sticks became my toilet trip routine 😂

Purplerain1144 · 22/01/2022 16:34

Update.... had bloods done for my fertility referral on Thursday. Had a call from my GP yesterday and I'm actually about 7 weeks pregnant. WTF!!! So might be worth doing a pregnancy test if you get the same as me!!

@Purplerain1144
Congratulations! The exact same thing happened to me!!

Purplerain1144 · 22/01/2022 16:38

Thank you...so strange isn't it... wasn't exactly how I expected to find out!! But good job I had the bloods done i suppose 😂

Wow huge congratulations!! ❤️ that's amazing. I hope you don't mind me asking but I know you said you were CD8 did you have a period as normal? X
Purplerain1144 · 22/01/2022 19:03

Thank you!
I think that may have been spotting/implantation bleeding that I mistook for my period! So my last period was actually 5th December. All very confusing!! X

@Purplerain1144 Thank you! So confusing isn't it, I'm currently having what seems like a period but lighter and shorter than my normal, but I do have irregular periods so think I'm going to start testing earlier this cycle. Xx

Purplerain1144 · 22/01/2022 19:20

Definitely worthwhile testing, the 'period' was literally spotting and I've got a bit now so fingers crossed all OK. Got another HCG blood test on weds so hopefully things are progressing. Good luck! X
