Microgynon - combined pill

Hi everyone
I have been put on Microgynon by my fertility clinic for 2 weeks to enable my cycle to start a bit earlier (as the clinic closed over Christmas, I've been waiting a while to get started with my IVF cycle). I've taken 6 pills so far and every morning I've woken in the early hours with horrible nausea, following bad dreams. I'm also suffering from bad headaches. Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, how long do these side effects last?
I'm pretty annoyed with my clinic for having put me on such horrid medication but now I'm almost a week in I'm a bit reluctant to stop as if i stop the pills now I imagine by next cycle will end up starting late rather than early, which is really frustrating.
Any help would be most welcome!
Anna

I had it years ago, it's one of the common ones used as very cheap. The nausea wears off, but the headaches never settled for me. They were awful, it took me a while to realise it could have been connected, I convinced myself I had a brain tumour they were that bad. I switched to Mercilon, another combined pill and had no side effects at all. I'm now over 35 so take Cerezette, and have been fine on that too.

I've been on Yasmin for nearly 3 weeks. The first 12 days I had terrible Nausea, hot flushes and food aversions. That's settled but I now have sore breasts and very vivid dreams every night for the last 2 weeks! I'm hating this pill but giving it a chance to settle.

This was the first pill I was ever given, for contraception. I was 17ish. It gave me absolutely awful nausea and vomiting for the first week or so of each cycle. I ended up missing college and puking all the time. Was a nightmare. Eventually my mum put 2 and 2 together and worked out that it was the pill causing it. I managed to change pill and was fine with a single hormone one.
I also got terrible morning sickness in my pregnancies, so I think I must be particularly sensitive to hormones in this way.
I don't know if it's possible for you to change pill? That was what helped me.

Hi everyone
Thanks for your feedback. Seems I'm not the only person hating this pill! As I'm only due to stay on it for 2 weeks it's a really hard decision to make as I'm hating being on it but at the same time i'm aware I'm almost half way through the duration I need to take it for and I know if I stop now I'll have to wait forever for my next period. It sounds like it takes some time for side effects to wear off, it at all, which is what worries me as I have taken other medications in the past which have caused initial side effects but these have always worn off within 3-4 days.

@AnnaLCox I had Microgynon just before I went on Yasmin. It didn't make me unwell but caused terrible spots, so I switched to Yasmin. I literally felt pregnant for the first 2 weeks on it! However, these are also common side effects.
If you are only on it for 2 weeks and are half way through, is try to persevere if you can, it won't be too much longer. Good luck with the IVF.

I took this pill on and off for a few years and it gave me nausea (as did others in the past). I switched to taking it at night so I wasn't so nauseas in the day time. I think it could have caused mood swings too.
So glad I'm off the pill now, we are ttc again. I dont think I'll ever go back on it.

I was on Microgynon for almost 12 years. I never experienced nausea but suffered with headaches and also very vivid nightmares / night terrors which I didn't realised were linked. I came off it in November to TTC and I have felt a lot better since. Although disruptive, the headaches were not that bad and could be treated with paracetamol, I think as your body gets used to it, it calms down a bit. If you are only on it for a short period of time and it is manageable, then it might be good to stick it out, but only you can decide that. Wishing you lots of luck with your IVF too. X

Thanks everyone for your comments on my post. I had to stop taking this pill after 6 days - the headaches were so debilitating and I was barely sleeping due to the combination of nightmares and nausea. I stopped a few days ago and now I have bleeding (presumably a small withdrawal bleed as wasn’t on it long). Am I really going to have to wait another month for my period? It would have been due in 2 weeks had this stupid consultant not put me on the pill and I’ll be furious if this unnecessary course of action has put me back another 2 weeks. Any advice would be grateful.
