Blood clots and contraception

I went to see the gp to sort out contraception after having a baby and I ended up leaving without it getting sorted because I'm high risk for blood clots she refused to fit the coil, implant and give me the pill. She wasn't sure about the depo injection. So what I want to know is what form of contraception do you use if you have a high risk of blood clots? I don't want anymore children 3 is enough.

I'm also high risk just due to family history and previously have had the mini pill (progesterone only) called desogesteral. It's taken every day of the month without a break. Some don't get periods with it but I did every month. Never seemed to have an issue with it. Hope this helps

You use the progestin only ones- no estrogen. So you can use a mirena coil or a mini-pill like cerazette.

I had a blood clot on the brain at the age of 18 and had a year on warfarin. I was not allowed any contraception since then. I've managed child free with monitoring my cycles and using condoms untill I wanted to have a baby. Its not impossible, it just needs more forward planning.

Hi,

Sorry to butt in, but can I ask what happened when you were pregnant, did you have to take any blood thinners?

I too had a blood clot and was on warfarin for a time. No hormonal contraception allowed since then. Hoping to start trying for a baby this year so wondering how this may affect me.

Thanks!

As soon as I found out I was pregnant I started heparin injections daily which I did through the whole of my pregnancy. You will probably end up being consultant lead and your birth plan will be robust and have lots of contingency plans in place. Don't worry they take good care of you. That side of things went very smoothly for me actually, unfortunately my DS ended up being evicted 6 weeks early due to preeclampsia which I'm told was nothing to do with any of my pre-existing conditions and just one of those things. We had to stay in a week's and a half after his birth as neither of us was healthy enough to leave but after that we were just fine. We were well looked after and they made me feel very comfortable about it all tbh.

Hello. I'm a contraception nurse and I can tell you that with a risk of blood clot or even having a personal history of VTE you can safely have progestogen only methods such as implant, pill, Mirena coil, injection. If wanting to avoid hormones a copper coil is good. It's a shame she sent you away without anything leaving you at risk of pregnancy.
