Short luteal phase

Hi, has anyone got experience of ttc with a short luteal phase? We’ve been ttc for 18months during which time I’ve had 1 mmc at 7 weeks. From tracking my cycle I’m generally ovulating very late, around day 23, and then cycle is around 30/31 days so my luteal phase is under 10 days and what would therefore be considered “short”. A quick Google of this brings up research around short luteal phases being linked with difficulty ttc due to the uterus lining not having sufficient time to develop for implantation. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience of this and any solutions? I’ve read progesterone may help (and also the links with sustaining early pregnancy too) so am going down that route to hopefully get it prescribed. Any advice, support or shared experiences would be welcomed as it’s an ongoing struggle!

I took Vitamin B6 for short luteal phase, I got pregnant in that cycle.

Yep me!
My LP is 10 days... although had a cycle with LP of 9 days a few times too. Fell pregnant with DS1 with a few months no issues. DS2 took about 4 cycles but I took v high dose b6 and b-complex, high dose bit C and vit E as all these really help to balance hormones and raise progesterone on the LP. Managed to lengthen it to 11 days LP that way... don't think my short LP was actually an issue for me though in hindsight. I think I'd have fallen pg DS2 if I'd not done those things too.

Thank you @LittleMachine & @FinallySomeNormality for the quick response. Sounds like I need to up my vitamin dosage - I’ve just been taken a standard multi vitamin, high dosage vit d and folic.

Hey, just stumbled across this post and wondered how you are getting on? I also have a short literal phase of around 10 days and also confirmed endometriosis. I fell pregnant 2nd month of trying with my first but been trying 6 months with second and nothing yet xx

Hello, i have a 10 days LP too and been trying to conceive our 2nd for 7 months now. I had some blood tests done last week and expecting to speak to the GP on Monday to find out what is going on. I take all sorts of vitamins and nothing seems to be working.

ChocolatRaisins · 11/05/2022 08:58

I had a short luteal phase. My cycle was 23-24 days long, usually ovulating day 13 or 14. I had PCOS. I had to have fertility treatment in the end and fell pregnant on IUI cycle 1, then cycle 5 for next child. For both pregnancies I was immediately given progesterone for first 10 weeks to support pregnancy.

Kitty901 · 11/05/2022 10:50

@ChocolatRaisins same as you, 23 days cycles and ovulate on cd13/14. Did you do the IUI through the NHS the second time or you paid for it privately?

I took Vitamin B6 for short luteal phase, I got pregnant in that cycle.

And me actually. Although it was a couple of cycles later.

And actually apart from one period of TTC (after a stillbirth so my body frankly wasn’t ready) I’ve been very fortunate to be able to conceive quickly yet judging by my symptoms when I was tracking ovulation I’ve always had a short LP and it didn’t affect me.

not saying that to be all yay me I can conceive (staying pregnant was the issue) but to reassure you that a short LP hasn’t seemed to be a issue.

I was given Clomid to try and elongate my cycle, but it did nothing. I was told to do IVF, but refused to do it and would have only contemplated it as a last resort. I did injectables with IUI. I did go private, but only because at the time I was living overseas. I don't know if you get it on the NHS. It does cost a fraction of IVF. I was 35 first time, then 39 second time. My doctor told me I was wasting my time but I was stubborn as a mule with it.

ChocolatRaisins · 11/05/2022 12:51

I just wanted to add that on IUI first time, I got what I thought was a period (brown spotting) and thought it hadn't worked. The nurse told me to test anyway and it was a good job she did as I was pregnant and that day was brought in to get progesterone straight away.

I remember it being a battle. In fact that what fertility treatment is. It is your opponent and you are the warrior. You have to use every trick in the book to outsmart it, to defeat it.

Look after yourselves, and keep your eye on the prize and the best of luck X

@ChocolatRaisins thank you and very pleased it worked for you! I have done blood tests with the GP and have an appointment with them on Monday to see what they say about my short LP! X
