Progesterone - new guidelines

This year I've had a pregnancy of unknown location, an early miscarriage and a disappearing bfp before my period came as normal. I've just had another bfp and obviously anxious. I've been reading about the new NICE guidelines for prescribing progesterone for those who've had miscarriages and early bleeding. Wondering if I should ask my GP about it? Does anyone have any experience of this?

I spot a lot anyway in the second half of my cycle but this month have been spotting every day since the day after ovulation and just feel so unsure about what is going on and want to make sure I'm giving it the best chance.

Hiya,

I'm in a similar position. I've had 3 miscarriages this year including a missed miscarriage of twins.

I found out earlier this week that I'm pregnant again so contacted my GP and asked for progesterone on the back of the new guidelines.

They were very reluctant to give me it and said because it's new guidance I'd need to contact the consultant I'm under at the hospital for recurrent miscarriage investigations for them to prescribe it.

I called the consultants secretary and she said she'd send an email. After a few days I still hadn't heard from them so rang the Early Pregnancy Unit who also said they couldn't prescribe it and it had to come from the consultant.

To cut a long story short, I only managed to get a prescription in the end because I know someone that works at my GPs and they were able to ring the consultant directly - they agreed to prescribe it but said ordinarily they don't until you've started bleeding.

It all seems ridiculous to me as with the new guidance I thought it would be given more willingly as it can't do any harm and may be the difference we need.

I would definitely discuss it with your GP and fingers crossed they are more co-operative.

Hi @TBF29

I'm so sorry for all you've been through this year. Thanks so much for sharing this, really helpful but how frustrating that you had to push so much for it. And that they normally wait until you're bleeding to prescribe it - what if that's too late?!

I'm not under a consultant yet - my GP said I'd have to have another miscarriage before referring me to the recurrent miscarriage clinic. I will give them a ring anyway and see what they say, fingers crossed.

Wishing you all the best with this pregnancy Flowers

Even with new guidelines it's still up to a consultant to prescribe I'm afraid & then some won't do that til 6 weeks and a scan to determine it's viable which is what they do here at my RMC

@Minster2012
ah, ok - thanks, good to know. Just so anxious each time I get a positive result and wish there was something I could do!

@cossmoss it's so hard & I was like you, just keep trying to push & push & push it's the only thing you can do. I believe this pregnancy (now 17 weeks) was helped by the progesterone I took but i hounded and hounded and hounded

It's so frustrating as you almost feel like nobody is willing to help.

Wishing you the very best of luck.
