Bad sperm results

Hi all,
My partner and I have been trying for 18 months after a missed miscarriage in April 2020. He had his semen analysis results come back Monday, and we have been told that he has more abnormal sperm than normal, and we will struggle to concieve again.

He has to have a follow up analysis and then I have to have testing done to see how they can help us. It's going to be another 3 months until our tests, and after that they want us to try for another 12 months before offering aids. I'm so sick of TTC. I just want to be a mother, and we have another obstacle now.

We are starting to eat really healthy and exercise more, is there any other suggestions you would have that could aid us getting his sperm in better shape? I was thinking some supplements could help but I'm not sure what ones

Thanks all

@ttcrainbowbaby1 I'm sorry to hear this!

Back when me and my ex DH were TTC, after 18 month we were told he had a low sperm count and we'd need IVF with ICSI to conceive. We started saving and stopped TTC. 4 months later I was pregnant!! We thought it was a fluke...when DD was born I never bothered with contraception. I fell pregnant with DS when she was 8wk old...ended up with 2 kids 11 months apart.

Since we divorced he has remarried and went on to have another son. They did try a while, like we had.

I just thought id give you a little hope that one bad result isn't necessarily the end.

My husband was told he had very low sperm count and I've been pregnant 3 times! First time he was given co enzyme q10 but I'm not sure if that was necessary. Don't believe what doctors say!

My husband had a SA done recently and it came back as only 1% normal shapes and motility/count was only just inside the normal range. Our consultant said we may need IVF ICSI but they the chances of natural conception are still possible, just less likely. He recommended 'lifestyle changes' and coq10 vitamins and then to test in 3 months. I went a bit crazy researching and this is what we have been doing since...

  • Loose cotton boxers
  • Vitamins: Ubiquinol (a more absorbable version of coq10), Wellman conception and
Omega 3.
  • More exercise (but no cycling and not super high intensity)
  • Trying to eat a more varied diet with plenty of different coloured fruits/vegetables, plus seeds and nuts (walnuts, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are especially good)
  • limiting processed foods and sugar (though we are not always very good at this 😓 but hopefully it's enough to make a difference!)
  • avoiding heating food in plastic containers

Some other vitamins I read can help are lycopene, alpha lipoic acid and l-cartinine but we haven't tried those yet as don't want to go bankrupt on supplements 😂

Most of this I took from It Starts with the Egg so it's backed with evidence!

Hope this helps! It's only been a month for us so far but I feel hopeful after reading others experiences 🤞

My (now ex)DH had incredibly low morphology and all speed appeared sluggish or dead on the sample.

We stopped trying for 3 months after 18 months with 2 very early miscarriages. He switched to loose cotton boxers, stopping having a laptop on his lap, and took a random concoction of vitamins - things like coq10, zinc - I can’t remember right now.

Anyway on our second cycle of trying I fell naturally pregnant with twins who are now 4. We didn’t have a repeat sperm analysis but obviously something improved as we manage to fertilise 2 eggs with healthy sperm.

Hi OP. It’s never impossible because it only takes one good one after all, but there are things he can do like the PP said. Take some good supplements, maybe impryl too, that and ubiquinol has improved my husband’s motility and morphology quite a bit. A low count is a bit of a different issue and might need some help, it really all depends on the diagnosis. It sucks a lot, we’ve been trying for over two years and there’s never been a BFP.
