Hi

I recently had a private AMH test done via medi checks, I’m pretty sure I have PCOS I have alot of the symptoms and relatively long cycles, however some bloods and scans have been normal and others just outside normal range.

I am 31 and the results came back today as 34.9 p/mol this showed on the chart provided with the results as normal range for my age.. however I missed the doctors comments

Which say ‘ this is high for a woman of your age and most woman your age result is 20 p/mol

It then goes on to say if they took 100 women with my results 98.6 percent would have healthy levels.

I’m confused does this result indicate PCOS? As I thought the result for that was way higher like above 70??

AMH is indicative of your ovarian reserve so a high result can be considered good news in many ways. It tells you that you have plenty of eggs left, but unfortunately doesn't tell you anything about the quality of those eggs. At 31 though quality shouldn't be much of an issue.

Women with PCOS almost always have a high AMH. However a high AMH alone does not always mean you have PCOS. I am 39 and recently had an AMH test and my level came back as 44.7 pmol/l. Very high for my age! Scan showed polycystic ovaries (28 follicles). But I have no symptoms of PCOS, have regular periods and conceived very easily in my early 30's. The consultant said I have polycystic ovaries but not PCO Syndrome. So high AMH doesn't always equal PCOS.

You mentioned in your post that other scans and bloods were normal. Have you had an ultrasound of the ovaries? Are your periods regular?

My scan and blood test were done at a private fertility clinic and the consultant explained the results in detail which was very reassuring. Have you spoken to anyone about the results?

Hope this is helpful. I've rambled a bit there!

@Ataglance thanks for replying

From what I’ve read online though 34.9 isn’t overly high for someone my age ? the results I’ve seen for PCOS are more like over 50

I have long cycles.. typically between 36-46 days and always have. I developed acne in my mid 20s and still struggle now I also do struggle with my weight but that could be what I eat tbh.

I’ve been told conflicting things by different doctors I’ve had 3 scans over the years .. one said my scan was normal, another said there was some signs of PCOS but ovulation was seen on the scan as it had recently occurred..

Bloods have also been up and down over the years some showed slight PCOS other times they were normal range I have always had bloods done due to going to the doctor regarding my acne not for fertility reasons.

However I don’t have children and wound like some in the near future so I wanted to investigate as someone’s my long cycles worry me

That's annoying that you've had conflicting information. Your AMH looks on the higher end of normal. Mine was above normal for age and scans clearly showed polycystic ovaries. The sonographer said that I have had polycystic ovaries all my life and that I always will have them. I'd asked if it was something I could have developed recently and she said no. I say this to be reassuring because I had no trouble conceiving at your age, it's only now that it doesn't seem to be happening. My cycles used to be regular but 34 days long.

Perhaps you have mild PCOS? I would be reassured by regular cycles even if they are long. I know you can get breakthrough bleeding without ovulating but I'd imagine it's more likely that you're ovulating and have long cycles? From the limited amount I know PCO or PCOS isn't a barrier to conceiving as long as it isn't stopping ovulation.

I found my fertility MOT quite reassuring. It cost me £300 for AMH level, ultrasound of uterus and ovaries and 1hr consultation with the doctor. So not cheap but informative.

@Ataglance possibly is high end of normal it is just confusing as the ranges for age 30-34 year olds is 4.1-58.0 so I assumed I was well within this range then saw the docs comments saying it was high for my age.

I was worried it was going to be low due to long cycles so I guess this is a better result than I was expecting

I have conceived 3 times before but when I was younger which for various reasons two ended in termination and one was a chemical.

I was doing ovulation tests a few months ago for about 5 cycles when I wanted to get a better idea of them.. it showed a positive 14 days before my period each time. Although not a 28 day cycle

I did think about doing a fertility MOT but will maybe think about it more when I am ready to try for a baby which won’t be for now

@Rosey1334p just wanted to chime in that that range is massive and I'd be very worried if my amh was only 4.1 at 31 so the 58 doesn't sound right either?

Do you know what your LH and FSH counts were? I know one or two ladies on here btw that have had conflicting pcos results yet who have been prescribed either Metformin or clomid to help with TTC. Might be worth trying out Metformin, especially if you have acne and weight symptoms too?

Rosey1334p · 02/11/2021 23:34

This is the range that came with the test
