Hormone Test Results have broken me!

First time posting on here, out of desperation!

I came off the contraceptive pill over 12 months go and have been ttc without success. Depseration recently resorted to an at home CD3 hormone test. My results have come back with high FSH and LH levels and low oestradiol, instructing me to urgently book a GP appointment to discover if its PCOS or Premature Ovarian Failure - Im only 26...

My query is can having an autoimmune disease alter these results? Has anyone experience results like this? I use OPK's every month and confirm ovulation with BBT and Proov sticks!

I've been told 3 weeks + for an initial consultation with the GP and i'm so impatient so I've ordered an at home AMH test meaning more money has been blown out of desperation Blush

Sorry, I don't know enough to answer but bumping for you

happytoday73 · 13/10/2021 21:22

I don't know...so bumping for you..
... But you seem very stressed about getting pregnant... Which rarely helps getting pregnant...
... I realise it's easier said than done but have you thought about giving yourself a break and thinking about it in January (avoids july/Aug baby youngest in year if in England)

I'm by no means an expert but saw your post and wanted to help a little, if possible. Firstly do you have any symptoms of PCOS - it's much more likely this than it is POF at age 26, although obviously not impossible. I know nothing about autoimmune conditions, so can't help there I'm afraid, but I do know that while PCOS can make it harder to get pregnant it doesn't always. Are your cycles regular?
Try not to panic. Someone more knowledgable might come along to enjoy more helpful, but hopefully you'll know more soon with results. What tests did you get for the at home ones?

Nacreous · 13/10/2021 21:30

If you're 26, presumably there's no real clock on this? 3 weeks doesn't seem that long to wait, though I know it can feel that way when something is worrying you. Ultimately if those options are or aren't true, nothing will change in the next 3 weeks, so just pause for a while and try and distract yourself with other things? Get an appointment booked in and then I would need to keep myself busy but other people might not.

@2much2do2littletime I have no symptoms of PCOS, however I have had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right which is why I did the home test. Whether this gut feeling has come from worry about trouble conceiving due to my mums poor eggs from 20 onwards I don’t know. I was conceived prior to this, my sibling at 26 via IVF.

My cycles are regular and the main concern I have is how light my periods are since coming off birth control.

@Nacreous yes I know I need to try and keep my mind off it, the news is just still fresh and I currently have a very close friend who is expecting following their first month trying and a family member expecting in the next few weeks so there’s a lot of baby chat at the moment which is typical! I have PCOS and although it did take longer than 'normal', I was able to conceive and have my little girl. The high FSH and LH levels are indicative of PCOS, along with the classic 'strand of pearls' cysts on ovaries, visible during an ultrasound.

Just to bear in mind that if it is PCOS, it may be more difficult but not necessarily impossible.

SlB09 · 13/10/2021 22:23

So my advice would be to just take a step back and breathe.

Can I ask were the tests finger prick or full/whole blood tests and also what part of your cycle you were in?

Also you need context, this is why at home tests are not always the best thing as interpreting them is a skill and forms only part of the 'story'/diagnosis.
There are other things that can cause high levels of fsh/lh and low estrogen that may be ruled in/out with other blood tests but these should all be done via the fertility specialist clinics which having tried to conceive for a year and having family history of problems would be more than appropriate to do.

What I will say is that nothing you are saying immediately screams total infertility - speak to the experts and until then try and keep everything in perspective for your own sanity!

2much2do2littletime · 13/10/2021 22:28

@CL22 - ok, so what was your mum's diagnosed issue then? 'Poor eggs' isn't a diagnosis - if she had POF then yes, that does increase the chances that you might too, again, if she had PCOS then it's also thought to be hereditary.
As above though, 3 weeks isn't going to make a massive difference whatever the outcome, so while easier said than done, try to take your mind off it as much as possible as there is nothing you can do about it in the mean time.

Good luck though. X

Oh OP I am sorry you have all of this to worry about and also a GP app so far away :( it must be really hard for you to switch off from worry right now :(
I know nothing about the tests info but I do have PCOS, I also have 2 sons. I just wanted to warn you that getting a diagnosis for pcos is a long process so don't expect to have an answer to that straight away. You'll probably start with a scan and some blood work... so if it puts your mind at ease and you can afford it then could you arrange a private scan?
When pcos was first mentioned to me I cried for days as I was convinced I'd never conceive. In that day my sister also shared her pregnancy news(!), typical ey? I spent along time dwelling on it but fortunately I was blessed with 2 sons. Had I struggled though I was assured there were so many things that can be down to help conception and pregnancy so basically what I am saying is that having pcos is not the worst thing that can happen!!!
Also, just another thing, the pill completely screwed me over for a good year or so after coming off it! This could be a contribution?
Hope you're ok op, must be so hard for you xx

CL22 · 14/10/2021 08:04

@2much2do2littletime the test was a finger prick test on cd2 and the results interpreted by a doctor who has thrown these two scenarios at me.

@SlB09 my mums poor eggs were diagnosed as unknown fertility, until recently when a doctor said that her fertility issues could be down to undiagnosed endometriosis

I’m going to try my best do take my mind off this and de-stress. At the start of my cycle I said I wasn’t going to focus on ttc this month and instead focus of getting back in my exercise routine and booking our wedding! Star
