Has anyone had a hysteroscopy before? Have you done it under GA or LA with IV sedation?? I want to hear your experiences .. I'm terrified !!!! Sad

I had one about 4 years ago. I was surprised how little pain I felt tbh. I did take a couple of paracetamol with codeine beforehand though, just in case. I just felt a tiny crampiness as they passed the fibre optic camera through my cervix, no worse than period cramp. They warned me I might feel a sharp pain when they snipped the bit out for biopsy, but I felt nothing.

Take a pad to wear after coz you do gush a lot of water out when you cough or move around for an hour or so afterwards.

I had it done on a work day. I was back at my desk within an hour.

Hi OP. There was a thread about this recently.

I had one done with no sedation or pain relief and for me, it was horrific. I would have taken the GA had I known and been offered one (which I wasn't).

It seems to vary a lot between women though.

Apologies - it was Feb so not recent!

I’ve had two with no sedation or anaesthetic. Took a couple of paracetamol before. I didn’t find it painful at all, but I believe pain experienced can vary massively from woman to woman

driftcompatible · 07/10/2021 16:20

I had one 3 years ago. It hurt - I won't lie - but I didn't need sedation or anything more than over the counter pain killers after.

Xxrzx · 07/10/2021 16:24

Did you have local anaesthetic?

Did you have LA ?

Ooh following as I've been referred for one as I can't get pregnant.

I've had a cervical biopsy without any issues and tolerated an endoscopy without sedation so I'm hoping I can manage this without a GA.

crispinglovershighkick · 07/10/2021 16:58

I wasn't offered anything. I enquired about sedation, they put me on hold and came back to say the only options were GA or nothing. Iirc they said there were issues around consent under sedation?
I don't love the idea of GA but I want to avoid trauma, so that's what I did. You don't know if you'll be the one who breezes through it or the one who has a nightmare.
The good news is that it sorted me out after six months of constant bleeding and biopsy results were unremarkable. I hope it works out well for you OP!

I had one about eight weeks ago. As I wasn't expecting it (was just booked in for a scan initially) I hadn't taken any pain killers or anything. Wasn't offered any painkillers or anything and it was fine. Slightly uncomfortable but I was chatting to the nurse and watching the screen which was interesting. It was fine and I have a low pain threshold.

Had another two weeks later to remove a polyp. Was told to take ibuprofen an hour before and given a local anaesthetic. Again slightly uncomfortable but over in a couple of minutes.

bluey9 · 07/10/2021 18:37

I had one in July with no pain relief. Not gonna lie it hurt but only for a short time, the procedure was less than 10 minutes and the bad pain was only for a few minutes, the rest was just uncomfortable. I was offered gas and air but refused it. If I had to do it again I would chose to do it again with no pain relief so it can't be that bad Smile good luck

bluey9 · 07/10/2021 18:38

Oh tell a lie I think he numbed my cervix

Firsttimetrier · 08/10/2021 07:55

I tried to have one last month to remove a polyp but they couldn’t get through my cervix and it became too painful to tolerate with just painkillers.

I’m now waiting for an appointment where I’ll be under GA to get it done.

There was no way I could relax enough through the pain.

Thank you for letting me know. Did it hurt you with just the local anaesthetic?

No. Didn't hurt at all with the local. Just a bit uncomfortable for a second or two when they injected the LA but that was it.

smartiecake · 09/10/2021 21:08

I have one next week. Also feeling very nervous about it

JaffavsCookie · 09/10/2021 21:13

I had one a few months ago.
The first bit was without any pain killers but then when she went to remove the large polyps she popped a bit of local in and it was fine. I had booked the rest of the day off and was pleased I had done that but it was totally bearable.

Franca123 · 10/10/2021 20:44

I had only nurofren. The pain was excruciating. I can't emphasise enough how painful it was. I collapsed afterwards. My legs buckled under me. I was traumatised. I would never do this without sedation. However, you could go ahead with no pain relief but immediately stop if the pain is too bad. It's barbaric that they don't warn you. I believe 1 in 10 women have the excruciating pain but 9 in 10 find it fine.

Would you suggest going under GA? I've never been under GA so I'm really scared about the whole thing

I’ve had 2 under GA. I requested the first slot of the morning and came to at about 10.30 and was home by midday.

Franca123 · 10/10/2021 21:55

I've only had one GA and it was wonderful. I would definitely get GA. However, you're most likely to not have extreme pain. I would ask the Doctor what the plan would be if you did have the pain. And then just immediately stop the procedure if it did become too much. Chances are, you will only experience discomfort.

Xxrzx · 10/10/2021 22:12

I will get GA, thank you ladies Smile
