42 years old, Pregnant or Perimenopause?!

Hi,
This is my first post so apologies for its length, I am losing my mind and hope someone has experience or insight.
I'm 42 years old, had been trying to conceive for a year or so but had recently let go of that idea (I have been pregnant before).
My period stopped suddenly 3 months ago. I have always been regular as clockwork. I took a First Response (FR) digital pregnancy test and negative. Second month passes and no period, another (new box) FR digital test, negative. We have been in full COVID lockdown for three months, homeschooling my 10 year old and I'm in the last months of my PhD. I have been sick the whole time, nauseous, exhausted. So, to say I have been stressed is an understatement.
Everyone close to me chalked up my symptoms to extreme stress related to my PhD.
I have finally been able to make a GP appointment for next week and, as I just missed a third period I figured I should another take a test as I knew my GP would ask me to. My partner went out and bought two FR digital tests. The first one was POSITIVE and I just about died. I immediately took the second test and negative. Cue mass confusion.
I did a little googling and found out that FR tests are not always reliable and, in Australia, have actually been recalled multiple times. So my partner went out and bought three completely different brands and every single test came back POSITIVE (six tests all up). I have been pregnant before and have been experiencing similar symptoms this whole time but the initial negatives made me overlook it.
HOWEVER, from more googling, I discovered perimenopause can give false positives and also mimic symptoms of pregnancy ( as I said, I'm 42).
I'm honestly so confused. If anyone has any similar experiences I am all ears. I have booked in for my GP but can't see them until next week and it's really doing my head in.
Thanks for anyone who has taken the time to read this.
x

My youngest was born just before my 42nd birthday. I also thought she was peri-menopause symptoms. If you've had that many positives, I'dsay congratulations.

@PineappleWilson
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Did you initially get any negative pregnancy test results?

You have been having unprotected sex. Have not got your period. Have multiple positive pregnancy tests. My money is on you are pregnant.
Stress can cause you not to get your period. But it does not cause positive pregnancy tests.

No, it hadn't occured to me that I might be pregant (we'd been trying / not using protection for the best part of 7 years!). I just stood in the shower one day, looked down and thought my boobs looked like they did when I had last been pregnant. Penny dropped, took a test and positive. She's now 3.

What time of day did you test? First thing in the morning? The time might be a factor.

@Halo1234
Seems straightforward, I think the multiple negatives just threw me. To me, negative tests have always meant no.
@PineappleWilson
I took the tests at a mix of times, evening and morning. I think just having such a mix of positive and negative results has left me so confused. Wondering if it might have been a peri menopausal increase in hCG. I guess I'll have to just wait till I finally see my Dr. The possibility it could actually be pregnancy seems so unlikely for some reason!

Just an update to my original post. My blood tests have confirmed I'm pregnant. Pretty shocked. Just going to take it one test/scan at a time.

@OldHag666 huge congratulations

I hope you don’t mind me asking - was anything said to you about HCG /menopause giving false positives?

I’m 42 peri, desperate for a baby and got a positive test NYE morning and a further three over the last 24 hours. I’m besides myself waiting to book in for a blood test. Period is due 2nd. No misses yet. Reading lots re increased HCG abs false tests. If you feel able to comment please do x
