TTC Metformin

TiredMum01 · 03/10/2021 19:25

I am currently trying to TTC for our next little one. I have PCOS and have irregular peroids so makes it hard. I’ve had one early miscarriage, next pregnancy I went into labour at 22 weeks and unfortunately it was too early for our baby to survive. Next pregnancy we had our little one. This year my peroids have been even more irregular so I have started on Metformin, currently my 4th month and it hasn’t helped yet. Just wanted to know if anyone else with PCOS has used metformin and it’s helped them have more regular cycles.

Sorry for your losses. Flowers

I have PCOS and we used metformin (which regulated my periods) + letrozole (which induces ovulation) to conceive our DD. I was taking metformin for over a year and my endo consultant warned at the outset that it might take 6 months to work. I also had to up the dose, so if it still isn't working, might be worth checking whether you've been started on a lower dose? It did make me have regular periods but unfortunately i still wasn't ovulating. I was referred for letrozole and conceived after 3 cycles. Are you seeing an endo consultant or is your pcos being managed by your GP? I have generally found that the consultants are more clued up than GPs so worth considering asking for a referral if you aren't under consultant care. Mine tracked my bloods alongside the metformin to see if it was having an impact on ovulation.

Good luck with your ttc journey.

Ah thank you for the reply. I’m on 1500mg of metformin a day. My doctor said it would take a couple of months so I was hoping it would have started helping regulate them. I just assumed it would bring on ovulation too.
I haven’t heard of letrozole so I will look in to. I’m just being looked after by my GP, I didn’t realise I could even be referred if I’m honest. I clearly need to do some research. Thank you

Hi guys I'm so sorry to jump on but I am in a similar situation. I have pcos and have been TTC for a few years (with 2 losses), we have no children. Do I need to be referred to a fertility specialist to be prescribed metformin or can the dr just prescribe it? Feeling desperate at this point. Sending love to you both and I'm so sorry for your losses x

Hi @eastview Sorry for your losses. If you've been trying for a few years, you should definitely qualify for help. I was referred to an endocrinologist by my GP, who prescribed metformin and then the endocrinologist referred me to the assisted conception unit for letrozole. But i have heard from others that they have got it through the GP. So GP is maybe the first place to start? Wishing you lots of luck Flowers

@eastview I would try your doctor first. They can prescribe metformin or clomid. I didn’t know they could refer you to a specialist until guiding spirit mentioned it.

My doctors only prescribe metformin as it was less than a year since we started trying. She said she can refer clomid but after a year of trying.

Sorry for your losses too, Do your doctors know about them?

Hi 👋🏻
I have pcos and take 1500g Metformin, I also take a few supplements so essential I rattle when I walk lol
I take omega 3, Proceive plus, vit d, magnesium and inositol 🙂
I was taking 1000mg but wasn't working but since upping the dosage I have had x2 periods 🙂
Whether it's the Metformin or all the supplements who knows
Xx

TiredMum01 · 05/10/2021 07:00

@MrsBiddy oh wow that is a lot. I struggle with the 3 metformin tablets but I’m not great at taking them. How long have you been taking the Metformin?

OP posts:
MrsBiddy · 05/10/2021 08:11

I was taking the Metformin x2 tablets for 4months and wasn't doing anything ( I had constant light bleeding and no real periods for 7months)
Then started x3 and periods have returned (only had two so far and no bleeding in between)
I don't mind taking the supplements, I take them all in the morning, the Proceive and inositol are power so I drink those

X

Sorry for your losses Flowers I was on 1600mg of metformin/day, and the results were not great, so then my doctor increased it to 2000mg/day and I was a lot better.

Good luck!

TiredMum01 · 06/10/2021 20:12

@MrsBiddy when you upped to 3 tablets a day did you find that it helped lower your cycles quite quickly?

@IsabelHerna when you upped it to 2000mg a day how long did it take for you to see results?

OP posts:
MrsBiddy · 06/10/2021 21:41

Well it had been ages since I had a normal period

I'd say it took about a month (taking 3 tablets) for my period to return my latest cycle was 39days

IsabelHerna · 13/10/2021 10:14

@TiredMum01 A couple of weeks for sure. How are you getting along?

TiredMum01 · 13/10/2021 17:41

@IsabelHerna
I’ve had a peroid which I was happy about but my last cycle was 73 days. I’ve been on the meds 4 months so just threw me off how long this cycle was. It just sucks how long the cycles are as means you have to wait longer to TTC

@TiredMum01 I understand... Oh, somedays I just hate this journey! I just wish we could all magically arrive at our destination!

Hi ladies, sorry to jump on this thread but I've just been diagnosed with PCOS and have been prescribed Metformin. I was just wondering if you had any side effects taking it? I've heard stories about upset stomachs and nausea so I'm doing all my research before I start it!

MrsBiddy · 20/10/2021 16:40

@MissC07
Hi 👋🏻

Yeah I've read stories, sometimes if I've eaten a lot of sugar or carbs it gives looser stools. So I would not over indulge.
Gradually increase the dosage, I took one tablet for a week and then increase to two and then 3 , but take your time and I always take with food

Good luck x
