Pregnancy test positive from toilet bowl

We’re trying for our second baby. I did a HPT on Friday morning as soon as I got up. The dye wasn’t running across the control window once I’d done it. Not wanting to waste the test, I (off-the-cuff) decided to dip the tip of the test into the urine in the toilet bowl – and it gave a faint positive line. Since then, I’ve done 2 digital tests and 2 Boots dye ones, which all came back negative.

I know some may think it was daft for me to test the urine in the bowl – I do too really! But now I’m really not sure what’s going on.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Who do you share your toilet with Confused

JJHN22 · 02/10/2021 14:44

Just my husband

Considering cola as an example makes lateral flows positive, I would assume toilet cleaning chemicals could do the same with pregnancy tests as a possible explanation?
Otherwise maybe it caused the dye to run by too much exposure/2 times of exposure

I'd test again in a day or two and ignore the toilet bowl result. Any urine would surely be much deleted in a toilet bowl. Four negatives in a row but still test again.

Oops diluted that should be. Sorry. Blush

Thank you

Could you be further on that what you think? Google the hook effect. This could explain your positive from the toilet bowl maybe? Good luck x

Thanks! I had a read about the hook effect – interesting!

I’ve just had a docs appt and he pretty much said to discount the positive test if the others came back negative. Hopefully next time 🤞🏻

My first thought was hook effect. When I was about 6/7 weeks I had to literally only use a drop of urine with loads of water to get a line

JJHN22 · 04/10/2021 11:24

Oh wow 😮 Maybe I should try this in a couple of days, just using a drop.

i am afraid it's likely that the chemicals in the toilet bowl just messed with the test.

Hook effect doesn't really happen til about 10-11 weeks. I used FMU at what turned out to be 7 weeks with twins (HCG of 27000) and got a lovely strong positive. so unless you think you could be 10 weeks plus its unlikely to be hook effect

MATTSMAMMA · 04/10/2021 18:37

If your not sure of your dates then the hook effect is a possible explanation. Maybe get a twin pack of first response and try one diluted and one normal urine and see what happens? Good luck x

Hook effect happened for me (not quite sure why I was testing when I already had an obvious bump but anyway Confused)

Any chance you could be much further on? If not it's likely just to be an effect of the chemicals sadly.
