Want to add a third but husband's not sure.....

I have two sons, 3 1/2 and 15 months and I desperately want to try for a girl. The women in my family tend to get hysterectomies in their early 30's (my mum was 32) and I'm 27 so the clock is ticking if I want any more. My husband is hesitant about having another so soon, any tips on how to persuade him??

also, my hubby is 45, so this may have something to do with it.

Don't know what to suggest jacksmommy, but didn't want you to think you were being ignored! Sounds like dh isn't totally against the idea though, just hesitant?

misdee · 10/11/2004 07:57

but what if you have another boy?

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 07:58

Some good friends of mine ended up with four children because they kept trying for a boy!

ernest · 10/11/2004 12:36

don't do it unless you will be happy with another boy, 50/50 chance (maybe more ) that you will have.
if you start trying now, there'll be at least a 2 year age gap. That's not that small, oldest would be in school I think, so it shouldn't be that difficult. My neighbours had 5 sons before their daughter was born

anyone else read this thread title as 'wanting to add a third husband' ?

You go girl!

(don't mean to be flippant, I'm in a similar postion re thinking about the third kid too)

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 12:39

I'm the 4th girl ...

if you want another child and DH does too then go for it ..but not if you just want a girl ..

are there any tests you can have to check if you will need a hysterectomy (I assume there's some genetic issue at hand) ..maybe if you know what your chances of needing one you'd feel less 'urgent'

MancMum · 10/11/2004 12:42

I would agree with misdee - what if it is a boy - maybe you should not try until you are reconciled with the 50-50 chance it could be a boy... then try to talk your DH round. I am sorry but I really have strong feelings about people who want a child of a certain sex - children are a blessing what ever their sex... why is a DD so important to you?

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 12:46

MancMum .. I think that's unfair .. people are entitled to have their dream of their own perfect family and wish for a child of a particular sex, surely?

Most people who say I'd like a girl or a boy are very happy at the end of pregnancy and birth to just have a baby whatever the sex

I think your issue might be for people who resent the child they have purely for the sex .. and I don't know anyone like that

zubb · 10/11/2004 12:49

does he say why he doesn't want another one?

Gobbledigook · 10/11/2004 12:52

I did SuzyWong!!!

I suppose it's entirely up to you but I wouldn't personally have another just for a certain sex but I do know people who have.

I always wanted 3 children so had 3 regardless of what sex they were (got 3 ds's). If you only want another because you want a girl, how will you feel if you 'end up with' 3 and they are all boys?? Would you be equally happy??

IMO, 3 is fab! I love it! Ds3 is only 10 weeks but can't wait till he is running around like a mad thing with the others and can't wait for all the muddy kits and wet Saturdays at footie practice!!!

jacksmommy · 10/11/2004 14:40

of course. i just said "try" for a girl. of course i'd still be overjoyed with another boy. my sons are angels. anyway, if i had another boy i could keep "trying" for a girl!!!

OP posts:
Gobbledigook · 10/11/2004 15:02

Just wondered if the trying was JUST because you want a girl or because you want a third anyway. I know some people get genuinely 'desperate' for a certain sex and are really disappointed when they don't.

we are the opposite, dh is keen, i am not but have the odd hormonal moment. Speaking from the 'other' side, i would say if he isnt keen then you have to get used to it

jacksmommy · 10/11/2004 23:05

my youngest son has been sleeping through the night since he was three months old, so that's not an issue. i just love my boys so much that i think a third could do nothing but improve our family. BTW i have always hoped to have four, but that may be pushing it. think i may be wearing him down, though.
