Can I chance it with rubella?

I recently took a blood test and it shows up that I am low on rubella immunity. Nurse has suggested that I should get vaccine for it which means two live jabs and delay my ttc plan for 3 months or so.
I am slightly disappointed because we have been ttc for over 4 years and now this... Which led me thinking how common is rubella nowadays? I haven't heard anyone catching it so can I actually ignore the advise and not get the jab?

It’s your decision and you can do what you wish but rubella is very dangerous for pregnant women and unborn babies with risks of pregnancy loss and birth defects. For me, waiting four years and then catching rubella and worrying about the effects would be worse than waiting four years and three months.

A woman I know is deaf and has SEN as a result of her mother's exposure to rubella in pregnancy. It has badly affected her life.

TheCheeseBadge · 31/08/2021 10:57

I have had 3 MMR jabs and I'm still not immune to Rubella (I know because of IVF treatment). You could potentially be the same.

If you had one of them as a child you'd only need a booster, so it might only mean delaying by a month. I know the feeling of "what if that month was our month", but rubella in pregnancy can have serious complications, so when I was in your position I delayed the IVF treatment and went for the jab, I know I wouldn't have forgiven myself if pushing ahead with TTC led to my baby being unwell.

It's pretty rare now, but the lifelong consequences for your baby could be absolutely devastating if you did come into contact with it. I wouldn't risk it.

halcyondays · 31/08/2021 11:01

It’s quite rare in the UK now but if you did catch it in early pregnancy there’s a high risk of miscarriage or significant disability. I wouldn’t take the chance.

Disneycharacter · 31/08/2021 11:54

I wouldn't take the chance without getting vaccinated. I also have low immunity to rubella despite vaccination and a (post baby one), rubella vaccine. I don't think they take in my body as I was also low after the other births.

MadeForThis · 31/08/2021 11:57

I would get the vaccine and wait 3 months.

LaBellina · 31/08/2021 11:58

I had the same issue as you when I was pregnant, low antibodies against rubella from my childhood vaccination and I was going to travel to a place where at that time was an outbreak. Rubella is very dangerous to an unborn child and my gynecologist has told me that if I want to get pregnant again, I definitely should get vaccinated against rubella again. Personally I think the chance to catch it in the UK is pretty low but if you do…it can have very serious consequences and you can’t get it whilst you’re pregnant.
I would personally not take the risk.

MaverickDanger · 31/08/2021 11:58

In the nicest possible way, if you’ve been trying for four years, will three months make much difference?

I personally wouldn’t risk it, and any treatment you are getting etc would completely understand of delaying for this.

LaBellina · 31/08/2021 12:23

You can’t get the vaccine whilst you’re pregnant I mean. Or so I was told.

squirrelnutkins1 · 31/08/2021 12:24

I was the same as you but I took the hit and had the vaccination and had to hold off TTC. It's horrible but i know I couldn't forgive myself if something happened.

squirrelnutkins1 · 31/08/2021 12:25

That's true. The nurse wouldn't give it me until my period to be sure as we were actively TTC.
PepsiHoover · 31/08/2021 12:26

I wasn't immune when I had DC1. I had my MMR after I had him. I didn't know beforehand so couldn't get it done before.

Same thing happened to me. Except I never received the rubella vaccine when I was younger.

I had the full MMR and only had to wait one month.

If you're trying naturally do you need to wait?

mumwon · 31/08/2021 12:33

unfortunately because of the antivax movement there is a significant minority of dc who have not had the mmr
Please don't risk it - 3 months isn't that long to wait & the risks to your little one could be devastating
Hope your road to having a baby will be quick safe & successful after this

LaBellina · 31/08/2021 12:38

^^ this is where your risk mainly lies
I wouldn’t take the chance

Caspianberg · 31/08/2021 12:39

I had Mmr as child, but when pregnant tests showed I wasn’t immune to Rubella. It was put on my notes, and after Ds was born they gave me the rubella vaccine the next day before I went home.

robovac · 31/08/2021 14:03

Thank you all for your messages and sharing experience and all.
Of course I know deep down that the jabs are inevitable and is in my best interest. And of course I will go for them. It's just deflating and like someone mentioned "what if this month is the month?" feeling...
well at least I can take a break from testing ovulation and all that. At this rate we may make a Christmas baby? ;)

Aww no! I understand you're feeling "but maybe one of those months was the lucky one" but I wouldn't ignore a suggestion for a vaccine, but that's just me, you can decide what you want.
