Hi
I have posted before about my dilemma but since I started ttc near the end of August my AF has gone awol.
Its now November and still no sign of it even though I have been having the usual signs of one on its way such as vague aches etc.
I have done loads of HPT and they have all been a BFN.
Anyway I have had the results of a BT to determine the cause and it turns out my thyroid is underactive and I have been put on thyroxine.
The results also show that my Fsh level is high which my doctor thinks is down to the thyroid.
I just find it strange that my AF dissappeard as soon as I started ttc if the underactive thyroid is to blame as my doctor thinks then why didn't it cause my AF to go awol before.
I am sure people are probably sick of me posting about this on here by now but I really don't get it.
Has anybody else any experience of their AF going absent like this when ttc.

Hi zez,

I haven't been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid but when I started TTC in August my cycles suddenly became very long. The first one was 41 days then the second one was 50 days. This can be quite common if you have experienced any stress but I hadn't. No money worries, no deaths in the family, no divorce, hadn't got the builders in, don't hate my job and have got a lovely boss. And I have had all those things in the past so I can differentiate between feeling stressed and not.

I couldn't get any answers from my doctor so I asked to be referred to a gynaecologist, I'll be seeing them next month.
I know what it's like to feel so helpless not knowing where you are in your cycle, whether you're pg or ovulating or not.

The most productive thing I did was to start acupuncture. Not only is it relaxing but it's supposed to help balance your hormones, which is essential for ovulating and then getting AF. When I went for my initial consultation he did say that the reason why my cycles are so long was because my energy was low and everything in my body was sluggish (which sounds a bit like an underactive thyroid). I'm still on my first cycle of treatments but I think I've ovulated earlier than the last cycle and will either get AF or a BFP in the next week or so.

Perhaps the best thing you can try is to kick-start your thyroid with the thyroxine and maybe acupuncture or reflexology. Are there any dietary changes you can make? Would a low GI diet help? Focus on getting an AF rather than a BFP and live as though you're not ttc'ing. Plan holidays, go to the gym, go shopping for clothes that you won't be able to wear when you're pg. Then if you do get a BFP before AF turns up that will be a lovely surprise . Otherwise, once AF arrives you can start ttc properly.

Hi Digitalgirl

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.
I do feel helpless at the moment I do have concerns that I could be in the menopause which is driving me mad.

I am not really sure how I determine for sure that my absent AF and high FSH is down to menopause or the thyroid.

Early menopause is in the family bewteen the ages of 38 and 40 I have just turned 37.

Maybe I should hang out and see what the next set of blood tests show.
I feel I need to ask my doctor more questions or maybe even ask for a referral to a specialist to see where I stand

yep, totally get where you're coming from

I've got underactive thyroid so I rarely get AF. I'm on CD64 at the moment! I think Aunty Flo's gone on holiday or something. Just let the Throxine kick in then see if AF arrives. I, myself, need to get checked out by GP but keep forgetting to call them (far too much to do).
