Ovulated on day 6, pregnancy unlikely?

I usually have a 28 day cycle (give or take a day but it all balances out.) I almost always ovulate on day 12-14 of my cycle. Very occasionally however I ovulate early but my cycle remains a normal length of 28 days. This month I ovulated on day 6 of my cycle! I know because of very obvious ovulation pains. I have checked with an ovulation stick, I definitely haven't ovulated when I would normally be due so it seems that really was it. Is it possible to get pregnant so early on or is this most likely to be a sign of failed ovulation or an inadequate egg? Having googled it seems the evidence is ambiguous, studies mostly focus on women who habitually ovulate early. I am 38 and it seems this might be more common in reproductively older women due to fewer viable follicles developing so the egg is selected earlier but I'm not sure if this is reduces the viability of the egg or chances of conception.

I think tbh that it's more likely you didn't ovulate on CD6. I know it's not unheard of, but if you're just going on ovulation pains then it's not a reliable indicator.

If you normally track ovulation another way then I'd keep testing to see what happens when you're mid-cycle.

I guess you'll see if AF shows up on CD20 but I really don't think you will have ovulated on CD6. Ovulation pain is not a good indicator and can be due to small cysts, follicles rubbing etc.

But to answer your question, it is highly unlikely an egg released at CD6 would be mature enough to result in a BFP.

I do have quite short periods, 3-4 days usually so CD 6 or 7 would be very early but it was after I had finished AF so maybe time for a new lining to be built up enough? I had a noticeable line the day after the suspected day of ovulation but not as dark as the control. I didn't think to test before then but now I'm in the middle of my cycle I have nothing, only the faintest almost imperceptible of lines, no EWCM. Having looked at previous months ovulations I normally ovulate around day 11/12. It will be interesting to see when AF arrives given that I normally have a 28 day cycle.

I suppose if there was a viable egg it may well not have implanted yet so I will have to wait and see. I'm not expecting I am pregnant tbh as it seems unlikely the egg would be viable, I'm more concerned about the early ovulation signalling declining fertility!

The best way to detect ovulation is bbt. The shift in temperature is the only confirmation of ovulation.

Juno231 · 18/08/2021 11:13

@thelastallosaurus it's not even just about the lining - the follicle needs to have grown to the right amount before being released and the odds would be very low that it would be mature enough at CD6. You could be in for a late ovulation perhaps?

Like @toadstool32 said, only way to know is through BBT tracking

I'm approaching menopause (probably). I always ovulated day 12-14. A few months back I decided to avoid my fertile period that month, so dtd on day 5 or 6. Thought no more about it, even when I started getting symptoms a week later. Wasn't until 11 days after dtd I couldn't ignore it any longer so I did a test, laughing at how ridiculous I was. Turned out BFP. To say I was shocked is an understatement, however, it turned out to be a chemical, which was probably due to my age. My point is, you can conceive at the end of AF, but whether it will progress if you're younger than me, healthier than me, it's difficult to know, but I think possibly. Our bodies can be very unpredictable and anything is possible.

Well, AF showed up on day 18 of my cycle this month Confused so 12 days after what I'm even more sure now it was early ovulation. That's a normal luteal phase I suppose but a very short cycle for. Negative pregnancy test and normal flow. Something has definitely gone very wrong this month!

@thelastallosaurus madness! Have you had your AMH and FSH tested at all? Might be worth getting that done if the cycles continue to be a bit wonky like this!
