Help, fancy dinner - soft cheese etc when ttc?

I've booked a Michelin-starred restaurant as a surprise for DH bday later this month. I've been saving up for months, and it will make his entire year (big foodie). They have a secret, set tasting menu, and while they can accommodate vegetarians that's about as far as they go in making amends for dietary restrictions.

I will be 4-5 DPO on that day, and we are actively ttc. I won't drink alcohol, and I'm thinking to ask for vegetarian so there's no rare meat/liver etc, but they use unpasteurised dairy and I'm sure their eggs will be quail etc so not lion marked.

DH thinks just eat as normal, as if not pg, and a lot of what I've read focuses on the fact that a) you might not be pg and b) if you are it won't even be implanted/connected at that point, but some sources say act as if you're pregnant from the day you start trying.

Any thoughts? I'm leaning towards just being relaxed about it, because until you get a positive pregnancy test you aren't pregnant are you? So surely the risk of getting salmonella/whatever is the same as usual?

Definitely just eat what you want (and I'd drink too - presumably you're unlikely to get wasted at a fancy restaurant anyway). You'll feel so sad and disappointed if you don't enjoy this special dinner fully and then you turn out not to be pregnant anyway.

I would just be relaxed about it tbh. The chances at a high end restaurant of getting salmonella/e coli/listeria are minimal. The chances of getting them anywhere are pretty small.

I wouldn't even worry about choosing the vegetarian option if you usually wouldn't.

Eat what you want to eat, no harm can be done at that stage anyway. I’d also have a glass or two as well, make the most of a special dinner.

I’m a veteran TTCer of the sort that did rounds of IVF and swapped all my Tupperware for glass and did every bit of baby voodoo possible.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me not to eat normally at that point.

Realistically speaking, even booze prior to positive test would be fine, but I can see that’s an easy thing to knock off so you feel like you’re trying.

Honestly, eat the food. Enjoy it.

Eat the food and have a glass of wine! I was TTC my first for 5 years in the end - you can't put your life on hold for it. My current pregnancy was a total surprise and I was drinking cocktails about 5wks pregnant. I was just wondering why I didn't seem to be enjoying them much...

I've not even really followed all the food stuff this time round (3rd baby). I've really gone off meat but I've basically just been eating normally otherwise. I've only ever had bad food poisoning once in my life and it was from a bowl of pasta ordered in a restaurant.

Since having my first I have a pretty low alcohol tolerance (one 175ml glass of wine is my max) so definitely won't be getting wasted! Have pre-ordered the wine flight for DH though Smile

That's so true, if I don't get pg this month I would probably be more disappointed that I'd missed out on this amazing meal.

I would eat and drink as normal - even after a positive pregnancy test, the baby wont share your blood stream. I figured that 2 weeks every month was a long time to put my life on hold if I had to - so I enjoyed moderate drinking, hot tub and ate what I want the month I got my BFP!

whataboutthesalmonella · 02/07/2021 20:34

Thanks all for the common sense - you're all spot on. Really appreciate the sense-check. I may have a wine. And not bother with the veggie option.

I was massively anxious in my first pregnancy but am now too tired and have mush for brains so my anxiety is much much less. I think I'm wondering if I should be more neurotic because I feel much more relaxed about the whole ttc than last time around.

That reminds me that I need to take more hot baths in the next 2 weeks too Grin

Candlecandlesss · 03/07/2021 12:55

@whataboutthesalmonella oh yes do!! I definitely didn't and it's really not the same having a warm bath! 😭
