Hello !

So my DP and I have been TTC for over a year now, to no avail unfortunately. We are currently under the GP beginning with fertility checks and tests for me.

I was speaking to my SIL the other night as she struggled to conceive our now little nephew, and she was saying about how she found her 2/3 hour 'window' the day of ovulation, they made sure to DTD at that time, which happened to be 4am in the morning, and our nephew was conceived! (After going through IVF etc and it all not working for them..)

So I didn't want to ask for more info as I don't want her (or anyone) to know we are TTC. But I've never heard of being able to pinpoint this precisely before?? Snd im now panicking that this is perhaps the reason why I'm not pregnant yet. Maybe all this time I've been completely off the mark??
Is it a known thing to DTD exactly when the time is right?!
I use ovulation tests and make sure to DTD around and on ovulation.. but how do I find the exact moment / time?!

Sorry if I sound stupid.. but I'm so confused and now worried that it was just this 'simple' all along.

I'm not sure about the whole 3 hour window thing.

I'll use my example on my app which I still log my periods on but used when TTC. So sorry if TMI but my last period was 4th June and lasted until 8th June.
My ovulation started on the 13th June but my peak and highest chance to get pregnant was the 17th June.
Sorry if TMI again but I notice on my highest chance to get pregnant on that day I always have mucus. When I check the app it's always on the highest day.

Good luck in your TTC journey x

Some people get pregnant even though they had sex once, a few days before ovulation happens. They sperm will make their way into the fallopian tubes and 'wait' for the egg to be released, they don't need to be injected in and just the right moment... although perhaps if you caught it, it might help? 🤷‍♀️ as to how you would catch your ovulation with window??!! Im not sure anyone could possibly know? 🤔

firsttimemummy321 · 19/06/2021 06:57

It sounds like maybe that was just their month and they had the positive ovulation test at that time and went for it hoping and that time it worked?
🤞🏻 for you

bitheby · 19/06/2021 07:51

I'm no expert but I think the only way they would know their 'window' is by going through fertility treatment and having trigger shots and scans and learning how many hours between a peak OPK and ovulation for her.

Maybe temping too.

There are so many theories anyway about how many hours the sperm need to go through various processes before they're ready to fertilise the egg and various theories about them being there early rather than to coincide with ovulation. I would say that the window is probably a myth.

justpanic · 19/06/2021 08:00

Thank you all! It's just completely confused me. I always thought as long as you cover yourself around the date of ovulation, on the date and a day or two after then you're in with a good chance?
They never had a round of IVF in the end as their little one was conceived naturally after all.
I just had this sudden realisation last night that perhaps it was me preventing our dream all along for not being begged clued up about my body! ☹️

OP posts:
bitheby · 19/06/2021 08:03

I would cover yourself earlier than that. Sperm can live up to 5 days whereas the egg is only 24 hours. So your fertile window is 5 days before and one day after ovulation.

If you have sex in the lead up to ovulation that's supposed to be the best time.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 19/06/2021 08:12

There is no way to identify a window of a few hours. Its great it worked for her but she has clearly been reading unfounded theories online or similar. If you have a normal length cycle then your best bet it at least every 2 days from CD9 to CD 20 - that'll cover it!

justpanic · 19/06/2021 08:12

Thank you!

I wondered if anybody is able to take a look at my ovulation test results too..?

I was adamant this month that I wouldn't track anything as I get myself so upset and stressed.. but last week I had a very strange metallic taste in my mouth, so I decided to take a test just to put my mind at rest. I have attached below a picture of the first response early result test that I took… I am sure that I can see the hint of something but just not sure that it's got any colour. What do you think?

The ovulation tests that I have photographed below are over the course of the last four days unfortunately I don't have any from beforehand as I haven't been tracking. What I find a little bit strange is that these ovulation tests don't seem to have changed in colour at all?

Now I'm panicking..

If that test was last week, have you taken another one? If you were pregnant it would be much stronger by now. HCG is meant to double every 48 hours.

justpanic · 19/06/2021 08:19

@bitheby
Unfortunately not as I don't have any more frers, but have taken some 25miu online cheapies which are stark white. So super confused.

Sadly I can't get out to get any more FRER's since we are currently away in a really remote little part of the UK. But once home I'll try one!

I wouldn’t fixate on the opks now, if you’re not expecting to ovulate then they can’t reliably tell you anything. I don’t see any colour to the line myself so I’d say wait. I’ve never read anything about a 2-3 hour window and I’ve read lots about ttc. I know it’s not easy but please try to avoid blaming yourself. You’re taking the right steps to identify and resolve any issues xx

LemonLemonLemon · 19/06/2021 08:42

You should DTD before you ovulate. Sperm can live quite a while in waiting. Don’t get too carried away with specific windows -
Good luck!

bitheby · 19/06/2021 09:08

I'd say a tentative congratulations. OPKs don't distinguish between HCG and LH so can be used in place of pregnancy tests.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 19/06/2021 09:23

If your cheap hcg tests are negative , its unfortunately a negative. A line like that on a FRER a week ago would give a clear line on a cheapie by now

I have a normal cycle length but ovulate on day 10. That window of shagging would represent over a week of wasted effort for me! By day 11, time has almost run out.
justpanic · 19/06/2021 09:35

I think perhaps the frer has given me a dodgy indent / evap line. Absolutely can't stand frers they always seem to do this to me! 🥲

I assume that I'm probably ovulating soon, then. Going by those OPK's.

The pregnancy test looks like a positive but a very early one?
Could you get a cheap one today and maybe test? I just used the £1 pregnancy tests.
