Is it possible to become allergic to something during pregnancy?

Hi all, been ttc for 4 months now. I've always eaten salmon quite regularly as dd loves it. Dp made salmon for dinner this evening and as soon as I started eating it I got a really itchy mouth (I have a similar reaction to aubergine, but have had that for years), which is of course a sign of an allergy. It seemed so odd as I've never had it before with salmon and it got me wondering whether it was possible to develop an allergy during pregnancy, and whether it could be an early symptom. Does anyone know? I'm also in the tww so perfectly possible I'm just symptom spotting! But does seem odd so thought I'd ask Mumsnet 😊 anyone got and knowledge/experience of this??

Yes, you can develop an allergy at any time.
Keep some anti histamines handy in the event of new or more serious reactions and maybe cut out salmon for now :)

Yes. This happened to me with hair dye. The Sam ensue I had been using for 10 years.

I would say yes, or make an existing mild one worse.

Yes it is. Without trying to scare you I've known of women developing allergic reactions while pregnant, when it has then transpired when weaning that the baby has allergies. Sesame seeds and peanuts were the case for one of my friends.

I was going to say this. I’d been going to the same hairdresser for 10 years before I got pregnant with my first. The hairdresser was immediately wary of colouring my hair as adverse reactions in pregnant women are common.

I became allergic to my cat.

I got my BFP a couple of days ago and my first big symptom (though I didn't realise it was a symptom at the time) was my allergies. I've always had a little hayfever in the past but this is like nothing else - its horrendous! I've constantly got a blocked or runny nose, post nasal drip so mucus in my throat, a violent cough and other usual hayfever symptoms but 10x worse than normal. I really thought this month wasn't my month because of all of this!

Thanks for all your replies 😊 also feeling like it's not my month, but it did seem odd! The body and pregnancy are just fascinating aren't they. Not testing til tomorrow but I guess I'll see if it means anything then.. I hope I'm not just getting a salmon allergy because it's a frequent ingredient in our house as dd is pescatarian (and fussy!)

I developed a gluten intolerance when pregnant. So yes, it's entirely possible (and really annoying!)

For me I became highly sensitive to general hay fever whilst breastfeeding. But not before or after.
It happens.
