Is it stupid to skip the smear and get pregnant

I was due my smear in November 2020, and planned to get it when I had my coil out when we were going to start trying. I had to have my coil out as an emergency at the end of January 2021, go checked my curved and said it looked very healthy. Got pregnant within 2 weeks, chemical. Then again right away with twins and miscarried at 7 weeks. A&e doctor was nagging me about my smear when I hadn't even had a confirmation of miscarriage. We plan to have one or two cycles off for tests and recovery but it says 3 months before I can have my smear and we just don't want to wait that long, as my amh is tanking. .1.7 at 34. An I being stupid?

Can you explain why you are putting it off and it may help people answer your question?

Hopefulhedgehog · 13/04/2021 07:21

There is obviously no guarantee you would immediately get pregnant after 2 cycles off so I would suggest you just book your smear for as soon as you are allowed it and continue TTC. Just book it for early in your cycle.

Why wouldn’t you want peace of mind given your history? Just because they it looks healthy means nothing. Get your smear done and then try for a baby, you’ve got confirmation for a few years that you’re ok then.

Chanel05 · 13/04/2021 10:19

Get the smear, they can be life saving. Do not put it off.

Toria33 · 13/04/2021 11:12

@hopefulhedgehog. With a amh of 1.7 as of October I only have until it hits 1 (when you hit menopause) to have children, we have none, I have only slept with two men and I had a smear after sleeping with the first which was clear. Then my current. So there is a very small risk to having hpv and I planned to have the smear after the baby. I just don't want to loose any more eggs as my reserves are so low. If I didn't have to wait 3 months I would get it done now.

I would book your smear for as soon as you can have it but carry on ttc, if you get pregnant before then just cancel it and get it done after the baby but i wouldn't stop ttc if i was you

Hopefulhedgehog · 13/04/2021 11:57

@Toria33 has someone told you that you shouldn’t have a smear while TTC? That’s what I was trying to understand from your post. What is stopping you having a smear as soon as the 3 month recommended time has passed?

Juno231 · 13/04/2021 12:02

Is there an option to get the smear done privately and out of the way? I assume the 3 month wait you're talking about is the nhs wait for an appointment as this wasn't clear?

You can still get cell changes in a monogamous relationship so don't bank on that.

Onebrokentoe · 13/04/2021 12:34

I had a smear at about 6 weeks pregnant. This was 16 years ago and I’m not in the UK so I’m not sure if this was unusual or not. I questioned my OB at the time and she was adamant it was safe. I can’t remember exactly how many, but I would have been years overdue for a smear.

Onebrokentoe · 13/04/2021 12:35

Pressed post to soon, but my point being that would having a smear whilst ttc be unsafe if they’re given whilst pregnant?

Toria33 · 13/04/2021 12:40

It's not that there is a 3 month wait it's that a NHS gynecologist told me that I had to wait 3 months for the test (as a miscarriage can make the test abnormal when things are fine). I want to get it now, I called the gp and they are asking for nurse advise. I'm not TTC this month I lost like 2 pints in a&e and feel emotionally and physically awful.

Apparently the cells take around 3 months to settle back to normal.

In answer to your question, yes I do think your being stupid. Your amh isn't going to drastically lower in a 3 month period. Get the smear done and go from there. Stop being driven by panic and look after your body first.

Toria33 · 13/04/2021 12:48

And yes, you aren't meant to get a smear while pregnant as it can make you miscarry.

I'm not a Doctor but this is what I would do too.
Toria33 · 13/04/2021 14:10

Just for further reference my amh was 2.4 in Feb last year.. so the 1.7 drop is pretty significant and is what is making me so nervous. I am chasing the smear in the hopes they can do it on our test break but it depends on what the nurse says. My gp didn't seem very concerned.. half of it is being traumatised by being mentioned by a Dr in a&e when I was miscarrying.

I was due my smear when i was pregnant but they said i had to wait until 12 weeks after baby was born i think the nurse said something to do with changes to your cervix while you're pregnant can make the smear inconclusive/wrong so have to wait until everything's gone back to normal, so i assume that's the same after your miscarriage

Juno231 · 13/04/2021 15:48

thank you for the clarification. If I were you I'd go ahead with ttc but also book the appointment in so that in case you're not pregnant in 3 month's time you can go ahead and get tested.

Toria33 · 13/04/2021 16:11

We've conceived every time it just keeping them which is the problem.. getting tests done through a private consultant over the next few weeks. If we don't get pregnant again then I will get it done.
