Conception

Has anyone tried the shettles method of conception (I think that’s what it’s called?) and did it work?

I’ve a mind to give this a go when TTC, I know it isn’t guaranteed by the way!

I assume then that you have a preference as to the gender of your baby?

We have a ds and I would love a girl but it isn’t the case I’d only be happy with a girl.

I had a preference before having ds and now I am so happy with him. So I’d feel the same! But it would be lovely to have one of each. It’s just wondering about natural methods that might shift the odds in our favour!

I did Shettles when ttc dc2. It worked. But obviously it could have just been coincidence. I now have one of each.

Obviously there's not a guarantee, but a few friends have tried this method (or similar), with regards to DTD at certain times for a particular gender, and it's worked for them.

I did (by complete accident) do the shettles method with dc2. Sex once, six days before ovulation which is supposed to be a girl. I had ds.
There's a website called ingender where people are obsessed with shettles and other 'swaying' techniques, if you want to go down a rabbit hole.

Unfortunately there is no evidence at all that this method (or any other intercourse timing method) has any effect on the sex of the resulting baby. When someone says it 'worked' for them they simply got lucky - you'll get it right about 50% of the time regardless of whether you try a timing method, draw a pentagram on your bed or eat only kiwi before having sex.

The only methods that work are a) IVF with sex selection of the fertilised embryo or b) centrifuging sperm to separate for x vs y chromosome containing sperm (there is a small difference in weight that means a high speed centrifuge can just about separate them).

Fingers crossed though!

It can take longer to conceive when you're limiting DTD days, but if that's not an issue I'd say why not try. I didn't do it stringently, but I was aware of timing. As pp say, it prob is just luck, but no harm trying if you have a preference.

WithASpider · 01/04/2021 16:28

We used it for DS. Worked for us (sort of) but happened to conceive him on non-shettles shag!

kalidasa · 01/04/2021 16:54

I don't think there is any evidence that this works and quite a lot that it doesn't. There is some evidence that if you ovulate early you are slightly more likely to have a boy, and if you ovulate late you are slightly more likely to have a girl. This might also be why fraternal twins are more likely than average to be the same sex (apparently). But there's not much you can do about when you ovulate anyway!

I tried it with our second and had a girl (I wanted one).
Had forgotten about it with the third but had another girl. Wondering if I subconsciously used the same method now.
