Hi all,

I’m approaching my 13th month of trying to conceive now. I had a miscarriage recently though which ended in an early loss.

Will my GP surgery be interested at this stage? Or will they refuse my husband and I investigations because I had a positive pregnancy test? I know couples can start getting help after 12 months of TTC but am I not in the category of receiving help because I have conceived once?

I have no children. I’m 27 and husband is 29.

TIA

Xx

Yes, you can contact them. Explain the situation and see what they say.

TTC94 · 19/03/2021 08:31

@Standrewsschool thank you xx

Yes I did after 12 months. A few blood tests and I was found to have hypothyroidism. Six months later, after changing dosage to find the right levels, I got my positive.

sunnydaleslayer · 19/03/2021 08:43

Yes I did OP!

12th cycle I had 21 day bloods which said I was ovulating on that day. My cycles were only 26/7 days so the literal phase was not long enough to hold onto the fertilised egg. I'd had two chemicals previously.

GP didn't actually do anything but I looked into it myself and started taking vitamin b6 and bought a digital ovulation kit. Next cycle I ovulated day 18 and the next day 16 and got my BFP!

Good luck Smile

*luteal phase

TTC94 · 19/03/2021 10:23

@LucyMaxwellDM I’m glad you had everything resolved and got your positive.

I’m 99% sure I was tested for PCOS and an under active thyroid about a year ago and they came back fine then - not sure if they’d retest again.

But thanks for sharing xx

My cycles are 28 days and I ovulate on day 16 so I have a 12 day luteal phase?

I’ve been using the Clearblue digital ovulation sticks which give the flashing and solid smiley faces xx

Sorry about your miscarriage OP Flowers Do ask the GP if they can refer you for tests.

Hope you don’t mind me derailing your thread slightly but @LucyMaxwellDM do you mind me asking what you got your TSH down to before conceiving?

Juno231 · 19/03/2021 12:27

@TTC94 your cycle sounds good but I'd also get the ball rolling for OH to get an SA done. He could have low counts/poor morphology which contributed to it taking so long for your first BFP.

LucyMaxwellDM · 19/03/2021 12:44

@piglet81 I’m so sorry, I can’t remember. It was 13 years ago now! I know they went up by 25mg so 50,75,100, settled on 100 when I conceived them up to 125 during pgy and increased to 150 post natally xx

piglet81 · 19/03/2021 13:25

Thanks @LucyMaxwellDM I can’t remember things from last week, let alone 13 years ago Grin

Juno231 · 19/03/2021 14:21

@piglet81 I think the aim is tsh under 2.5 but for most ladies their optimum levels seem to hover in the 1-2 range?

piglet81 · 19/03/2021 14:59

That’s interesting @Juno231. I’ve got down to a TSH of 3.37 but the GP says that’s fine and won’t increase my thyroxine to bring it down any further. Think I might need to try another doctor.

(Sorry @TTC94 for sidetracking!)

Usagi12 · 19/03/2021 15:05

If you were recently pregnant they may well ask you to wait another 12 months before doing any further investigations. This happened to us. We tried for over a year, got a referral for testing then I got pregnant before the testing. MC after 9 weeks but they made us wait another 12 months before they'd send another referral.

We tried for another year then had tests. Turns out we had only a very small chance of conceiving naturally and IVF was our best option (which we did). I was so annoyed we wasted all that time for no reason. Apparently the failed pregnancy I'd had was a one in a million chance. If they don't know about the MC, I wouldn't tell them.

BusyLizzie61 · 19/03/2021 16:46

They can refer you, but nice guidelines say not to at this stage given your age and the fact that you have been able to get pregnant.

This is very positive and indicative that you would most likely get pregnant again within the next 11 months, but if not, then they absolutely should refer you.
If they did refer early, you wouldn't meet the fertility requirements which are based on nice, so would then have to start the process again.

TTC94 · 19/03/2021 17:12

@piglet81 thank you! I have contacted the doctor and made a telephone appointment. Xx

@Usagi12 @BusyLizzie61
This was what I was expecting. Unfortunately my GP does know about the miscarriage as I spoke to a Doctor for advice regarding my bleeding when I was miscarrying.

It sounds like it’ll be an unproductive chat with the doctor then.

The thought of trying for another 12 months makes me so sad. I’m so drained from the process already. We’d been pretty much had sex every day or every other day during fertile window for 13 months and other than the miscarriage, no luck whatsoever and that took almost a year xx
