HPV and abnormal cells

Hi ladies,

I recently had a third smear, and this time it’s come back with HPV and abnormal cells, after lots of googling (lol) I think I’m going to be absolutely fine 🤣

With regards to ttc, I assume I am ok to continue as usual? I haven’t had a chance to speak to anyone yet! I tried booking a colposcopy earlier and an seriously rude guy answered and told me clearly my smear isn’t “that bad” and it’s just “routine” so I need to be patient and wait for them to book me in as they have a back log due to covid. (The letter said to call, lol).

Hubby and I have been ttc for over a year now and all tests have come back positively fine so, we’d like to not have to postpone for any months 🤞🏼

Thanks ladies x

What did the results say?

I think guidance is normally to hold off TTC in case it does progress to something more sinister and a pregnancy gets in the way of cancer treatment.

Cin1? Cin2?

Izzie94 · 10/03/2021 22:09

Hey @Juno231 ☺️

It just said that I have tested HPV positive, so they tested my cells which have come back abnormal. It was quite a blasé letter, which I appreciate is just standard. My doctor is aware I’m ttc, but I know they wouldn’t say that specifically in a letter.

I’ll call the doctor tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks lovely, hope you’re ok. Recognise your name from other threads xx

So you have abnormal cells and have not been booked for a colposcopy? That's unusual, who was 'the guy?'. You need to speak to your GP.

In most cases it's nothing to worry about but it does need to be checked out.

Izzie94 · 10/03/2021 22:12

@Kfdbhydcjrsx it doesn’t actually say! It just says boderline changes? And HPV positive. And that I need to call to book a colposcopy to check everything is ok, so maybe I’m over thinking it already! Or maybe we should hold off until we have the all clear x

Honestly I think you'll be fine - especially if they didn't even say what the cells were (I had CIN3). It'll be one of those things done at own risk though.

I'm sorry to still see you around here and doubly sorry about the douche who picked up your call at the hospital! I'm okay, just plodding along - got cycle 16 starting end of this week!

sunnydaleslayer · 10/03/2021 22:12

Oh wait I just read your OP properly, my bad.

I would wait until after your colposcopy to TTC. Unless you can afford private?

Very frustrating that Covid is still being used as a blanket excuse for every delay.

Izzie94 · 10/03/2021 22:13

@sunnydaleslayer thanks lovely 🤍 I called the outpatient clinic which it said to on the letter, to which the male doctor told me that they’re super busy with covid responses, and that I need to wait for a call. He said it’s just routine and clearly my smear was “fine” 🙄

I’m going to try re call tomorrow to book or speak to my GP x

@Juno231 ahh thank you ☺️☺️

Oh isn’t it the worst??? We’re cycle 15 here, and my positive thoughts are slowly dwindling. But we WILL get there 🤞🏼 Have you had doctors investigations yet? I really think 2021 is all of our long term ttcers years!!!! We’ve got this! X

@sunnydaleslayer trying to save our pennies in case we need IVF🤞🏼 Due to DH having a son already we’d have to go private. So we’re trying to be a bit better with our money! But you know what maybe you’re right, it’s better to be safe than sorry. A month or so off may do us the world of good 🤍

I’m another one saying to wait.

A family member of mine conceived without knowing she had cervical cancer, I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.

Juno231 · 10/03/2021 22:25

@Izzie94 ah 15 for you as well! Yes I had my fertility clinic appointment last month and since then have repeated blood tests, SA, ultrasound and HSG. Got a follow up call on the 25th to find out the results and discuss next steps. So far none of our previous tests have come up with anything so I'm fully expecting it to be unexplained. We wouldn't be eligible for anything until the two year mark then so might still go private for ivf or perhaps try iui in the interim?

When are you thinking of taking the plunge on ivf? If cost is a big factor then I've seen threads on the infertility board where they all rave about the clinics in Prague - apparently they've got brilliant stats but cost only a fraction and are a great option if you go for short protocol.

Izzie94 · 10/03/2021 22:43

@Malteser71 so sorry a family member of yours had to go through that! That’s absolutely something I wouldn’t want to have to ever go through. You’re right. A few months waiting is nothing in the grand scheme ☺️

@Juno231 isn’t it one of those things where you’d rather there be an issue? My friends really don’t understand when I say to them I’d rather there be a definite answer to why it’s not happening and not just “unexplained”. It really hurts, and unless you’re going through it I don’t think people understand. I have way too many “just relax you’re too stressed” type of friends. 🙄 it’s definitely nice knowing you have those options hun, definitely do what’s best for you. For us, we’d definitely wait until January 2022. Were currently in the process of moving into a bigger house, slightly more on our mortgage so by then we’ll have enough money. And it’ll mark exactly 2 years since we started trying. I really never ever thought we’d be in this position. However I am grateful there are other options out there for us all🤍 oh absolutely. A colleague of mine conceived both of hers in Prague! The cost was nothing compared to here. I just don’t know if I have the balls to go abroad to do it! Finically were very lucky but I can’t say it’s something I ever thought I’d be saving for “just in case”. But hey, it adds to our story. And we will be some seriously patient parents! 😂🤞🏼 X

I was told to stop TTC until after the colposcopy (which also may include taking a biopsy) as if they decide treatment is needed (removal of abnormal cells) they will not do that if you are / may be pregnant. They won't even do biopsy of you are / may be pregnant. I was very upset but a lovely nurse told me that for the sake of a few months, it's absolutely worth it to make sure everything is fine! We had been TTC for 15 months at that point so I totally 100% feel you! Thanks

Malteser71 · 11/03/2021 07:44

Definitely worth waiting, I reckon.

I remember when I was TTC, how every month feels so precious, so I totally get where you are coming from. My relative’s cancer was quite advanced when it was picked up, so nothing like your situation, however it was a tragedy that could possibly have been avoided.
