FSH level too high for age?? (25)

acaciabluebell · 10/02/2021 23:26

My FSH on day 3 came back as 7 iu/l. It comes up as "normal", but I'm only 25, is this bad for my age?? Because I'm seeing 40 year olds with lower numbers on here 😣

Just to add, my LH was 3.8. So my FSH is nearly doubly my LH value. But I heard it's supposed to be 1:1 ratio 😭

Been TTC for 11 months, my husband is 28 and we're both healthy

@acaciabluebell a high fsh at a younger age usually indicates PCOS. Have the doctors suggested get tin you referred to gynae for a scan?

acaciabluebell · 11/02/2021 13:52

@Stabal Thanks so much for replying. I had no idea about that... I actually asked for a PCOS scan but my GP said it would be rejected as I don't have any of the main symtpoms (excess androgens, really irregular periods etc). But I have got the weight issues and difficulty getting pregnant. So frustrating

@acaciabluebell did they say this before or after to had your day 3 results? Also did you speak to the doctor about your results or just get them from the receptionist?

acaciabluebell · 11/02/2021 13:57

@Stabal I spoke with my GP, this was after my day 3 results. She just told me "your day 3 results look great" and didn't even tell me what the numbers were. I had to call the receptionist to email the results to me.

During the phonecall I mentioned my other symptoms to the GP and specifically said "I'm worried about PCOS due to xyz, can I get a scan to confirm"? And she said no, it would be rejected due to my symptoms not being severe enough.

My bloods never showed anything for PCOS, but a scan of my ovaries did. Could you push for a referral? My sister had similar trouble getting diagnosed as they wouldn’t refer her at first due to her not having a weight problem. I think PCOS is really badly understood by GPs.

Stabal · 11/02/2021 14:05

@acaciabluebell wow. I'm constantly surprised by GP's but also not? Haha. Is there another doctor at your surgery you could ask to talk with? Or maybe if you feel confident enough ask for another call with this one and just explain you've seen your actual results now and you're still concerned and you'd really like to know their reasoning behind thinking you'd be rejected. It's a nightmare to get them to listen to us but you have to stand your ground and let them know you know your body and probably know more than they do about the ttc ins and outs!

No experience of PCOS but other fertility issues. In your position I would pay for a private consultation if that's something that's doable. They will run all the checks and scan you. As they are specialists they tend to be much much better than GPs for fertility stuff. Good luck.

acaciabluebell · 11/02/2021 14:10

@Stabal Definitely will do. I've made so many appointments with my GP they must hate me 😂 but I do not care one bit. The most frustrating thing is having to wait a week each time for a measly 2 minute telephone call!!

@ellenpartridge I was actually looking into this last night. I was thinking of booking a private internal ultrasound which would be able to see if I have cysts on my ovaries or not, and also see how many follicles I have.

Its looking like my NHS fertility referral won't even be sent off for another couple of months, and then God knows how long to wait until treatment.

My main concern is my ovarian reserve, I'm petrified that I have lower eggs than expected for my age. I actually ordered a private AMH test yesterday night in a state of panic lol.

PCOS is a worry too, but secondary to the egg thing

@acaciabluebell agreed if you have the means then definitely look at private scans! I have PCOS by the way, I did manage to fall pregnant naturally last March after 2 years trying but unfortunately ended in miscarriage in May. Not the happy ending but just know pregnancy is possible! I'm now on Metformin while waiting for clinics to reopen because I ovulate late and this cycle I managed to ovulate CD22 instead of CD32/33 so 🤞 for the future

Get the private scan and don't let it drop with your GP.

Separate issue but I had major back problems in my mid 20s and eventually came to the conclusion that it was gall bladder related. I didn't have any of the main symptoms but all of the secondary ones. I had to argue like mad with my GP to get a scan, the person who did it said my gall bladder was about 10times the size it should be but no gall stones. I then had to argue again to get a referral to a consultant who told me that my GP said I didn't have gall stones so why was I there- I told him what the scanner had said, he said he'd see what other tests they could do, then came back 3 minutes later saying he'd looked at the scan and he'd book me in for gallbladder removal asap.

Lesson: if you think there's something wrong there probably is

acaciabluebell · 14/02/2021 00:24

Wow thank you for sharing your story @User0ne really appreciate it. Think I will definitely try to get a private scan and then go to my GP with the findings, if any.
