Question to Women with 26/27 Day Cycle

Hi there,

I'm tracking my ovulation closely as I'll be TTC via AI with a sperm donor and would like to hear from other women whose cycles are 26 or 27 days.

While so many people will say ovulation is usually 14 days before your next period, research is showing me this is actually fairly uncommon and definitely not a surefire rule - I even found a study that says that rule is extremely UNCOMMON.

I've had my surge on CD12 and on CD13 on two previous cycles and one cycle in between surging on CD10 which I put down to stress at the time as my flight to see my donor was cancelled after a week of watching the Sydney outbreak gradually build into a border closure.

But now this cycle I have surged on CD8 which has come as a shock as I prepare to re-schedule my trip to see my donor next cycle. I was hugely concerned that this meant my cycle will now shorten and throw off the planning I've been trying to nail down.

Yet after several days of research I'm finding that ovulating this early is by no means a sign of a shortened cycle or of poor chances of conception or in any way uncommon.

I found a very old thread with someone experiencing my exact circumstances and a wealth of women saying they'd successfully fallen pregnant on CD7-10 so I would just love to hear from some women with a similar cycle length to confirm my hopes that all is not lost with this early surge!

Any and all insights will be appreciated.

Sorry, wrote that in two sittings and realise I repeated myself in the second paragraph!

I would 100% add BBT tracking to your schedule if it's imperative you get OD right for ovulation. You can have multiple surges until you actually ovulate and I would doubt it was your "true" surge at CD7/8.

BBT has also made me realise that I ovulate the same day as my surge so if I was relying on it to get to a donor I'd be pretty hard pressed on time!

Track EWCM as well and your cervix position to be on the safe side.

Oh and at a minimum - swap to OPKs that detect oestrogen as well - at least that gives you a bit more of a heads up than just an LH surge.

I’m tracking every possible angle, I assure you, with the help of a donor with 17 kids and a 98% success rate. I’m 99.9% certain I ovulated on CD9 after my CD8 surge and so is he.

I wasn’t asking for ovulation tracking advice, I was looking to hear from women with a similar cycle length who could share their black and white data, their experience, and their success stories.

I’ve found a multitude of information about women surging/peaking/ovulating between days 7-10 so I don’t think your doubts are at all accurate.

I’ll wait to hear from women who can share the info I’ve asked for.

I agree with @Juno231
Are you tracking bbt op? I have shorter cycles but usually ovulate between cd13-15. The only way to confirm ovulation is a temp rise, so although you might have an LH surge it doesn't mean you ovulated and you can have several.

Once again, I’m not looking for ovulation or cycle tracking advice, I am well and truly on top of that and working with as much of an expert as there is outside of the medical profession.

So I’ll just be clearer: I am looking to hear from women with a 26/27 day cycle who have also ovulated early (as I’m certain I have), I am not looking for tracking tips or for my own knowledge to be second-guessed.

Just to fend off any further questioning of my certainty of my own ovulation, here is the older thread I mentioned where several women attest to early ovulation and successful conception:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/conception/626359-is-it-possible-to-ovulate-really-early-in-your-cycle?pg=1

And here is a study that cites how common it is for women to ovulate “early” (or “late”):

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC27529/

As such, I’ll again ask to just hear from those that can attest to the data I’m asking for.

Not 100% sure what you're asking.
But I'll put in my thoughts and maybe it'll be helpful.
I have a 24/25 day cycle. I usually surge around cd12/13 and ov on day 13/14. I then have about a 10day LP. I've had three pregnancies. The first one took 6 months to conceive and then lost it at 8 weeks. The second one was 3rd month after ERPC for the MMC. And the third pregnancy was a surprise.
I'm now trying for baby number 3 and we're on 2nd proper month trying.

We don't manage to conceive by playing it cool. We generally have to time it just right. But we haven't "struggled" because of a short cycle. I believe it's only an issue if your LP is short.

Not sure if any of that is helpful. But good luck.

I'm not entirely sure what answers you're looking for. I have a 27 day cycle and putting my 2 cents in like you asked.
I'm guessing you don't bbt and unfortunately without that you can't confirm ovulation, you can have a strong opk and not ovulate. It has happened to me, Lh surge early in cycle but didn't ovulate until later on, had another peak opk and then confirmed with a temp rise. Unless your donor is a thermometer he cannot confirm ovulation and I just wanted to give my experience like you asked.

Kitekat81 · 11/02/2021 09:30

@itsnicole84 I'm going to phrase this as carefully as I can as I don't want my head bitten off, but I would suggest, and I mean this with all kindness, that you perhaps start a new thread "Question for women who conceived on cycle day 7-10" as I think that is the heart of your question? I think we are all a bit mixed up as you've asked to hear from women who have 26/27 day cycles and most of us will ovulate much later than that. I personally have a 25-28 day cycle and ovulate on day 13-16, it's always 12 days before I get my period. I think a luteal phase of 11-17 days is normal, with most women it's 12-14 days. Wishing you lots of luck op, ttc is already so stressful so I can only imagine how much more stressful it must be for you having to time it right with your donor!x

SatsumasOrClementines · 11/02/2021 10:01

You’re looking for women with a shorter cycle who ovulated early. And you want them to tell you whether or not they successfully conceived on that cycle. Is that correct?

SweetShopSurprise · 11/02/2021 10:04

I have a 25/26 day cycle and ovulate between CD11 & 13. HTH

Juno231 · 11/02/2021 10:19

OP another thing to consider - if you supposedly ovulate on CD8-9 and then have a 26-27 day cycle it doesn't add up. Medically an LP can't be longer than 17 days and it's rare for it to be that long in the first place - hence why I was questioning your tracking...

Katie567 · 05/09/2021 12:13

@itsnicole84 hey there, just wondering if you were ever successful with your early ovulation? I also have ovulated as early as cd 8, but normally cd 11-12 so looking for success stories! Thanks

itsnicole84 · 06/09/2021 02:25

@Katie567 Funny timing, I’ve just done from the doctor to get blood work confirming my positive :) I surged on CD11 this cycle and I’m now 4 weeks pregnant. I have surged on CD8-CD10 previously though so I think you’re good!

Note: I didn’t try on the CD8-CD10 cycles as I’m doing this with a donor so I can’t necessarily attest to those surge days.

In the months I spent asking this question though, I’ve come across dozens of women that ovulate early who have conceived and had healthy babies!

So don’t believe the spin and myths, everyone ovulates at different times. In fact, I found three studies that showed the “normal” ovulation timing of CD12-CD15 is actually the SMALLEST percentage of women coming in at around 23-28%, whereas the earlier and later demographics are each over 30%.

So screw the “normal” myth, normal is simply whatever is normal for you.

@itsnicole84 oh amazing news, congratulations! Out of interest what day did you use the donor sperm? Sorry I'm being very nosey! From what I've read you've had a similar experience where your surge has come earlier that previously is that correct? I used to ovulate cd 14/15 but for the last 6 months it's been earlier. At first I put it down to stress but I think it may he she related as I turned 37 this year so not sure how concerned to be but your post is reassuring,!

itsnicole84 · 06/09/2021 08:21

@Katie567 Yeah, your FSH does tend to rise in your late 30s so it would definitely account for the earlier surge.

I surged at 8.30pm in the evening on CD11 and I received the donation at 4pm the following day.

i.e. as close to egg release as possible but allowing plenty of time for the sperm to make it to the tubes BEFORE the egg is released.

Sperm can arrive as quickly as 30 minutes, but sometimes take as long as 4 hours.

Feel free to ask anything you like, I’m an open book. I’m also a massive nerd that dealt with 9 months of delays and challenges and hence in that time put a lot of effort into studying every aspect of fertility to give myself the best shot. I don’t want to be smug but there isn’t much I don’t know at this stage, even my GP is pretty blown away by it. LOL.
