Is it recommended you wait a year before getting pregnant again?

I am 40, nearly 41, so don’t want to wait too long.

Advice seems to vary. I was told six months after my first emcs at 37 because of my age.

Surgeon said 18 months to me, but I know quite a few people who have got pregnant again before that (one was 6 months!) and all fine.. xx

After my third section I was recommended to wait 5 years but I fell pregnant just 10 months later and had my fourth section. Strangely enough that section was my most straight forward and I healed ok. If there are no serious issues I wouldn't wait taking into consideration your age, but get medical advice first and talk through the risks.

I was advised 24 months.

Hmm that would take me to being 43 when baby is born ... not sure that’s wise. I wonder why they advise you to wait?

I was advised 1 year by one doctor, and 2 years by another during my hospital stay! My pregnancies are IVF and the clinic told me that have to wait 12 months after a section before they are allowed to do another transfer, so that is what we did (I was nearly 42). Then covid arrived and everything got cancelled. Eventually got transfer done in October and I'm now 15 weeks pregnant having turned 43 two weeks ago. They advise you to wait because there is a serious risk of urine rupture, particularly during labour (uterine rupture is life threatening for mother and baby). Internal healing takes longer than external as there are so many layers to heal, so just because your scar looks healed, it doesn't mean that everything inside is fine yet. The older we get the longer full healing takes too so its not advisable to rush into another pregnancy immediately.

Congratulations! Lovely news!

Hmm but then would the above still stand if I insisted on an elective section for no 2? I had an emergency section and it was a breeze compared with labour!

I was never advised to wait. I git a positive pregnancy test on DD1 first birthday.

IndieRo · 18/01/2021 12:30

Got not git

Chanel05 · 18/01/2021 12:32

@Csectionttcmum the reason they tell you to wait is that there is a greater chance that your scar or uterus may rupture if you fall pregnant too soon. Of course, plenty of people fall pregnant again with no issues before the time period, but rupture does happen.

Yes it still stands as the rupture can happen at any point during the pregnancy not just during labour. Also, just because you have a section booked there is still a chance that you could go into spontaneous labour early.

I was told 12 months (as it happens we were enjoying ourselves so much that it has been close to three years), but the best thing to do would be to speak to your Dr as they may have more information from your notes as to whether it would be “more risky” to fall pregnant before 12 months post partum.

@Csectionttcmum hi! I was told 18 months - 2 years because of the complications I had. They usually advise a year to be safe with scarring and healing though.
