Copper coil experiences

Hi! Wondering if anyone had experiences to share about having a copper coil fitted? I had a baby 7 months ago. Booked an appointment to have it done this week. I want to have another baby in 1.5 years time. Will I have trouble conceiving? I am 33 now.
Thank you!

I've had the copper coil in since I had my first 5 years ago. It's mildly uncomfortable to have put in (crampy is how i’d describe it) and I usually get a bit if bleeding afterwards (like a light period). They say it can make your periods heavier initially but I've never had this. Once it's in, you cant tell it’s there.

Removal is quicker than insertion and pain free (for me anyway). No trouble conceiving after removal. I've had it removed twice and got pregnant with the first month both times. For me it’s been a really good method of contraception. It's hormone free and you just forget it's there!

Thank you for your reply! I heard that there is a string that dangles down. So you don't see or feel this?

Hi, I've had one in since July 2019. Mildly uncomfortable going in but nothing awful. I bled when it went in and my periods were longer and heavier for the first few months but this was mainly light bleeding either side of my actual period as opposed to 2 solid weeks of "period". Now everything is normal. As for strings, I've never felt them and neither has DP (sorry if that's crude).

It's been a life saver for me as don't get on with hormonal contraception at all so this was last chance saloon.

To feel the string you need to really feel around inside with your fingers. They are really fine so not immediately easy find. Dh can't feel them when we have sex but I think they can be trimmed if for any reason they're in the way (that's what they told me!) m.

I had mine for 5 and a half years and really liked it. Having it inserted was pretty painful but I didn't have any kids which I was told makes it worse. Afterwards I had light bleeding for a few days. I had it removed a few months ago which was quick, painless and easy.

It definitely made my cramps heavier - to the point I took ibuprofene for the first day of my period - but that was the worst side effect for me.

Isadora2007 · 18/01/2021 08:40

I had mine in for 8 years. The strings did get trimmed so exH couldn’t feel them during sex. Not painful for that. Worked perfectly. Periods have always been heavy so didn’t impact them. Heavy but not painful. Got pregnant 4/5 months after removal- age 30 at the time.

I had copper coil, had heavy periods, I won’t lie, I find the insertion very painful, I would rather just birth, but many people find it just uncomfortable, my GP advised me to take Feminax Ultra 1 hr before my fitting appointment. I am now on my 3rd & final! Mirena Coil, still bloody agony to be inserted, but worth it once it is in, this one will take me through the menopause. Good luck OP.

Peridotty · 18/01/2021 19:43

How bad is the pain? I gave birth and managed to get to 6cm with no painkillers at home. Is it like labour?
Is it a sharp pain? Cramping? Is it like having your cervix checked?

I got a coil fitted last week, 4 months post partum. The worst thing was the speculum, I bloody hate the things, find them painful and uncomfortable. The actual insertion of the coil was fine, I could barely feel it, and wasn't sore afterwards. I felt fine as soon as the nurse removed the speculum.

We are all different of course, but they say it's a bit easier within 6 months or so of giving birth vaginally, since your cervix is still quite soft and open.

NotmyfirstRodeomyfriend · 18/01/2021 19:54

I'm having my mirena coil removed tomorrow, I don't find the removal or fitting bad at all, and I've not had any vaginal births, although have dilated to 10cm twice... I previously had the copper coil, the bleeding was completely out of control, I'm talking flooding of clothes, into chairs... it was awful, I also don't cope well with no hormones. Unfortunately, I think the coil is just something you have to try and see how you get on with... I had it removed in between my children and fell pregnant within 6 months but I was 29/30....

CityDweller · 18/01/2021 19:59

I had a copper coil for 12 years! Had it removed to TTC and got pregnant straight away.

Peridotty · 19/01/2021 00:55

Is the bleeding out of control because it’s a heavy period or due to the insertion?
I haven’t had my periods return yet since I’m still breastfeeding. Will my periods come back straight away ?

Insertion pain was like sharp, heavy cramps. But after they settled down pretty quick. I think the bleeding is just because you've had something metal inserted into you.

Since the copper coil is non-hormonal it will not make your period return or affect the timing of your periods.

CityDweller · 19/01/2021 12:00

I didn't have out of control bleeding. Just heavier periods that lasted about a day longer. I think I had some minor spotting after the insertion, but nothing major.

The copper coil won't affect the return of your periods because it is non-hormonal contraception.

Aspiringmatriarch · 19/01/2021 12:11

I had one for a year or so, painful going in but only briefly, then afterwards felt quite tender for a little while. The problem I had was excessive bleeding, my periods were ridiculously heavy and went on for half the month so I had it removed in the end. Doesn't happen to everyone but I think it's fairly common.

Peridotty · 19/01/2021 18:41

If periods are that heavy, wouldn’t you develop anaemia?

Aspiringmatriarch · 19/01/2021 19:44

Yes, I did neck spatone though. Not had a blood test recently but I can't imagine it was good for my iron levels.

Peridotty · 30/01/2021 00:22

I chickened out of getting the copper coil!! Luckily the doctor called to cancel my appointment as she had an emergency. I decided that the heavy bleeding and the scary risk of breakage wasn’t worth it.
