Hello hope this is the right place but basically me and my partner had been panning on ttc last year but put it off. Now I really want to get my coil removed and start trying but im not sure if because of the current situation they will remove my coil. Has anyone been able to have theirs removed in the past few months? Obviously I'm aware that it's not essential right now I just really want to have started trying already thanks! Xx

Explain you want it removed to ttc. It will be fine.

A friend was encouraged to say she was having problems with hers in order to get an appointment to have it removed.

I was told by my doctor that they weren't doing that but that I could go to my local sexual health clinic to have it removed as they are still operating as usual.

In the interim period, I apparently accidentally pulled it out myself as they couldnt find it and after a x ray was nowhere to be found! I did remove a tampon rather forcefully and it hurt a few months ago so it came out then I reckon

This isn’t necessarily true. Lots of sexual health services have had to send staff to the COVID wards and/or to vaccinate, and so are open for emergencies only. They definitely won’t be running a walk in service. Find the details of your local, give them a call or book an online appointment and see what they’re able to offer

Obv I cant speak for every area but this is what I was specifically told by MY surgery. Also, its not a walk in service, i'd still have had to make an appointment.

I think that would be quite a serious beach of your rights if they refused to remove it. Might just be a bit more hassle than normal.

KimMarie34 · 16/01/2021 16:47

Not the coil, but I had my implant removed in late November. There was a bit of a wait (maybe a month or so) in order to get it out though.

Pinklilly · 16/01/2021 16:52

Realistically in the current surge it is unlikely that your GP will be removing the coil, as it is not an essential clinical service. It is not against your rights as it is not deemed a clinical need if it is for trying to conceive. Of course if you are having pain etc that would be different. GP can redirect you to an alternative clinic which would be appointment based. GP may also advise you to wait a month and book with them.

ThePlantsitter · 16/01/2021 16:56

Depends where you are. I had mine removed in December - because I wanted it removed. All coil stuff is fine at the sexual health clinic in my area and they have adjusted their systems but it's still doable. I googled 'coil removal my area' to find out.

Popsicle30 · 16/01/2021 17:01

My experience wasnt around having to get it taken out to TTC but my coil was due to be replaced at the start of April. I'd actually gone a month earlier (pre-lockdown) and was told there was a waiting list. Lockdown hit and they stopped replacing/removing coils altogether. I finally had it replaced at the end of Oct. My GP surgery doesn't provide a service for coils so I had to use the local sexual health service.
I agree you need to check with your local service. it may even be on their website. Do push. I was extremely unimpressed by the whole episode of just closing down this procedure. It made me very anxious at times as I have a copper coil and had to go on the pill again which really disagrees with me. I think if I had pushed my anxiety it may have led to getting it replaced earlier but I stupidly didn't.

Hopefully they are continuing this lockdown.

I got my coil removed at my local sexual health clinic in October. They had only just started doing them again. I had to phone and book an appointment, and they did a consultation over the phone to limit the time in the building. Good luck! X

1990s · 16/01/2021 17:04

Due to have mine our first week of Jan, they asked me to wait a few weeks which I thought was fair.

Assuming they are redirecting resources at the moment, will try again beginning of February. Happy with that.

LegendDairy · 16/01/2021 17:06

It's seems to be hit and miss depending on where you are. My local sexual health clinic wouldn't do it but my GP would. I had to wait 9 months and many phone calls to get the appointment only last week.

Coffeeandaride · 16/01/2021 17:09

Yes most times GP will remove. If not then sexual health clinic (all running here).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 16/01/2021 17:17

Got mine out in Nov at my gp, a nurse did it, no problems at all.

Potterurotter · 16/01/2021 17:22

My family planning clinic have stripped back and some are being redeployed, I phoned my GP and she took my implant out Thursday morning and I was told there were four doctors available to do that service

PurBal · 16/01/2021 17:28

I had mine removed in August. No problem.

MadKittenWoman · 16/01/2021 18:20

I had mine removed in September for different reasons, but I'd waited many months.

mouldygrapes · 16/01/2021 20:48

this is what I was specifically told by MY surgery

Could be your GP is very clued up on local issues, which is great. A lot don’t know what’s going on with their local services. I work in sexual health. Every day we get people calling up saying “my GP told me to come to you/ask you for X or Y” when the majority of the time it’s either not appropriate or not a service we can offer due to lockdown

Hwory · 16/01/2021 20:52

I tried to get mine out because I was having problems with it - told no

Tried to say I was gonna TTC - told still no and i shouldn't be having a baby during a pandemic.

Hope your GP is better.

kalidasa · 16/01/2021 20:55

I had mine out mid-November at family planning / sexual health clinic (London). They did the pre-removal appt on the phone but otherwise just as before, no probs.

Dancingbea · 16/01/2021 21:02

You should be able to get an appointment but if you can’t, I know plenty of people who have removed their own could -‘Yale’s included. You are only doing what they do in the surgery - ie giving it a good pull. It is different to insertion.

Dancingbea · 16/01/2021 21:02

That was supposed to say “myself included” Confused

freckledbint · 18/01/2021 04:37

i got my gp to remove my mirena coil in december - arranged the week before. told her about my problems with it (cramps, pain) and she booked it then and there. i know the covid situation has gotten worse since, but i had an attempted removal last may too when it was quite bad still. basically, if u need it they will find a way, and sexual health clinics are also available:))
