DH wants to TTC DC2. DD1 PCOS "miricle" baby scared & Excited

DD is now 14 months old. She was concieved whilst I was taking the mini-pill (occassionally forgot and didn't worry because of PCOS.) When I saw GP when I discovered I was pg she advised me that this could be my miricle pregnancy and that getting a 2nd time may not be easy. DH and I have been talking about having a 2nd when DD was 3ish. DH said today that he didn't think we should wait and that I should go and get coil removed and we should TTC asap. I'm excited and scared because what if GP was right and DD is my only miricle> Guess I wanted to hear others experiences.

Hi loopbear - are you on Metformin for your pcos? If not google pcos + metformin - it has pretty astounding results. I have pcos and prior to dd1 had 2 miscarriages which were devastating, then dd1 came along although she was a threatened miscarriage at 6 weeks so I know what you mean about miracle babies! when dd1 was 11 months old we thought we'd better try again as it had taken a year in total to get successfully pregnant with dd1 - well, you've guessed it, I got pregnant straight away - I have 19 months between my two girlies and I'm just begining to think about a third (dd2 is 19 months old) so I've just started taking the metformin again - I'm gradually building up to 2000mg a day but it can give you stomach upsets so you have to build up slowly. Best Wishes, you can do it!

Have appointment to see GP & my chineese medicine Dr (no idea if it works but I felt great through pregnancy seeing her!!!)

loopybear - I have pcos and was told i would need help to conceive so similarry to you didnt worry about occasional lack of contraception.. result was ds1 (age7). Been with my dp for 4 years. Was on metformin for symptons of PCOS and took 1 course of clomid. 31 weeks with ds2 PCOS does not mean no children.

Jekyllywoo · 28/10/2007 22:49

My gp prescribed the metformin - it's traditionally used to treat type II diabetes so some gp's are a bit behind the times and don't know about its use for pcos. I printed off loads of info and gave to my GP. One thing it did do was give me proper regualar cycles as opposed to once or twice a year before.

hi, no experience of PCOS but totally understand how you feel. i was told when i was 14 that i would never have children and when i found out i was having ds i couldnt believe it. we have since found having another baby very difficult, but thats another story (and more to do with external influences). but ttc if you have had probs conceiving is very scary. Attilathemeercat is our resident PCOS expert, maybe put a shout out for her?

PCOS is a condition that should not be messed with by GPs as it is often outside their own remit. I would keep an eye on your cycles - as you have PCOS anyway they are more likely than not to become erratic again. Another thing I would look into is getting a referral to a gynaecologist at a subfertility unit. PCOS needs a degree of careful management.

Verity is a good website for PCOSers - its www.verity-pcos.org.uk.

Any other questions just ask.

Attila

I think some gp's are capable of treating pcos without messing it up - but would agree that it is useful to see a fertility specialist - mine doubled my dose of metformin which for me meant the difference between miscarriage and a healthy baby.

Thanks everyone. I have appointment to see my GP who is usually great. WIll ask for a referral to see gynacologist although I imagine may say wait 6 months. DH is being so poisitive that it will all be ok and I'll get pregnant easily which on one hand is great but makes my fear of failing to concieve greater.
