Going to the GP for blood tests before TTC

Is this a thing in the U.K.? Getting a general blood test before TTC, to check that all your levels are ok and so you know what supplements you need (if any)?

I’ve never heard of it. The vast majority of women don’t need special supplements. Just take folic acid and you’ll be fine.

No, you only generally get blood tests on the NHS if you have symptoms. If you can afford it, I am sure you could get it done privately somewhere.

Depends if you have an existing condition. I'm celiac and so I'm required to have a blood test every year to check in fine. If you have something that could affect your levels you can usually get a blood test on request.

@Angeliana nope, in the UK if you are under 35 the nhs expect you to try to get pregnant for a year before they will do any investigations like blood tests or semen analysis, and for 6 months if you are over 35. As per the previous post, if you want to get them done before that then you may need to go privately.

No I think this is a thing in the US, courtesy of private healthcare.
Here you can do them privately or wait until the 6/12 month mark depending on your age.

I have seen it a bit in Ireland. Admittedly, they pay for them. Often they get their immunity to measles, mumps and Rubella checked.

I’m really surprised this isn’t a thing. You could be deficient in a vitamin or mineral and how would you know?

I wonder if you could go to the GP with vague concerns and see what a blood test shows? Surely it’s worth it in the end?

I don’t think they are going to give a blood test for vague concerns at this time.

Do you have any reason to think you have a deficiency?
