TWW - wine or no wine?

Perhaps a topic of contention, but do you drink (not excessively) in the two week wait, or do you act as if you are already pregnant?
I've had mixed opinions so am interested in what you do!

I did. But then I drank throughout my pregnancy as well. Nowhere near as much as usual, and weaker drinks than usual. But no way was I not having a drink for 9 months, especially at my wedding.
My mum drank and smoked as normal throughout all 3 of her pregnancies. My Nan the same both times. All fine. And I know others who have as well.

I found out I was pregnant at 6 weeks and is been drinking wine up until the day before I did the test no harm done 😊

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/01/2021 16:20

Not sure if the above poster is serious but..

Yes, I carry on as I normally would during the two week wait. You’ll drive yourself mad otherwise if you don’t get pregnant as quickly as you’d like. It’s a stressful enough time as it is!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/01/2021 16:20

It was the happymummy poster I was referring to by the way!

Braxos · 01/01/2021 16:27

Yep, you could be trying for over a year in some cases! Thats alot of wine to miss out on 😂 obviously (like any sensible person..) as soon as that BFP shows up then its alcoholfree for 9 months :)

VimFuego101 · 01/01/2021 16:29

If you were to get pregnant, the baby is not going to be sharing your blood supply immediately so I think the risk of having a glass of wine while you wait to test is minimal.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/01/2021 16:33

It wasn’t many years ago that there was no such thing as a ‘two week wait’ and you’d just wait until a late period to test. Only the advancement and cheapness of home pregnancy tests has changed that and now the TWW is a ‘thing’. No sense not to carry on normally in this time, IMHO. Like the PP said, you’ve no shared blood supply at that stage anyway, IF anything has even implanted.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/01/2021 16:38

Yes I carried on as normal, you could end up not drinking for years if you do that!

Thanks for your replies. I've been thinking about this recently (especially over christmas) - I've been ttc for five months and haven't been drinking in the tww, which honestly seems bonkers now. I woke up from a dream last night thinking it seemed a strange decision hence my question!
I am very reassured and will now carry on as normal, it will definitely relieve some stress 😆
I usually smoke when I drink but won't do that. It's been easier to not smoke recently as I'm losing interest in it...Since I was a teenager I have always smoked when I drink so it is an association that has been tricky to break!

@kaffy197 good luck

TheDaydreamBelievers · 01/01/2021 17:44

Previous posters are correct that in the first few weeks the fetus isnt connected to your bloodstream so alcohol cant harm them. Heavy alcohol use does reduce your chance of successful conception and increase your chance of miscarriage, so best to keep it light generally. I personally don't drink in the 2WW but I scarcely drink anyway so I'm not missing much!

farfromperfect82 · 02/01/2021 00:14

The main time to avoid booze is around ovulation as alcohol can confuse your hormones and also if you're temping it cause fluctuations. Best time to drink is during period. I do drink red wine during TWW after ovulation has occurred because this is a long road and giving up so many things during lockdown has sent me stir crazy... this Xmas I've had all the wines!
