How long to get a bfn after chemical pregnancy?

I’m on the TTC after 12 months+ thread but thought this might be worth a separate post. Does anyone have experience of how long it took to get a bfn after a chemical?

This is our 12th cycle ttc and I spotted on day 29. Positive test on day 30 but spotting turned to red bleeding and lots of it, like a period. Accepted now that this isn’t going to work out. I’ve bled for three days now. But it’s now day 32 and I’m still getting faint lines. Weirdly the lines are coming up in the afternoon rather than the morning (Yes, I am testing morning and afternoon looking for a bfn. I’m trying not to give myself a hard time about this.)

I thought it would be very quick to go negative as it was so early that I bled, basically when my period was due. I also have sore breasts, which is confusing me. I just want to put this behind me and move on.

First picture is my original positive on day 30. Second picture is this afternoon’s test.

Thanks.

Driving myself mad. First HCG result was on the low end of normal. Now I have to wait to see if it’s going up. I’m finding this so hard.

@ActonBell just wanted to say I’m thinking of u and hope it works out for u. I’ve had 3 CPs this year and still waiting for a sticky one x

Thanks so much @BriocheBuns I’m so sorry to hear about your cps Flowers I can’t sleep at the moment for the worry about what’s next.

@ActonBell - it’s a horrid feeling, just tell yourself that it’s out with ur control and whatever the outcome is u wouldn’t have been able change it. I hope it’s a good outcome of course x

Hcg has more than doubled so they are happy this is an ordinary pregnancy and not ectopic or miscarriage. I’m in total shock.

Ahhh congratulations ActonBell!! What a fab start to the New Year. Now try and relax a bit (though I know that’s easier said than done!)

Smilingdonkey · 01/01/2021 13:49

Ah fantastic news! Congrats xx

Just in case anyone comes back to this thread, I’m afraid it was an ectopic. The rising HCG was a counter- indicator but not definitive. It ruptured and I had an emergency op over the weekend.

Hi, so sorry you had an ectopic, that is brutal.

I've just found your thread because I'm in a similar boat, recently started trying again after a cervical ectopic in the summer. Didn't think I was pregnant this month, thought I'd got my period, but it then went on way too long (been bleeding for 9 days now). I did a test yesterday afternoon and it was positive. Spoke to EPU and they will scan me next week (my dates are all crazy so if there is anything to see then scanning this week might be too soon).
I think the best I can hope for is a straightforward chemical pregnancy but I'm nervous about the risk of another ectopic.

Smilingdonkey · 05/01/2021 13:09

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you are resting and taking care of yourself emotionally and physically. I had an emergency op after a missed miscarriage in April and it's hard going 😔 xxx

ActonBell · 05/01/2021 13:19

Thanks @Smilingdonkey

@Novice32 - I’m really sorry to hear about your situation. That’s so tough. I hope EPU give you some answers. The biggest thing for me was trusting my instinct that something wasn’t right and keeping going until we had an answer. I feel quite proud I managed to do that and it meant that they got to the rupture quickly. The staff were great but I had to be really clear that I had pain and bleeding that was not okay and not normal for early pregnancy.

@ActonBell yes you did very well to stand your ground and get treatment quickly, I hope you recover soon x

I think I will give it a day or so and see if my bleeding stops, if it doesn't then I might ask them to scan me earlier. I'm nervous because the only symptom I had with my previous ectopic was unusual bleeding, no pain or anything.
Also really trying not to hope that this might be a viable pregnancy, although there is a slim chance but it is most likely bad news.

Hi I know this is an old post but how long after your negatives did you start to bleed? I may be going through the same xx

firsttimemummy321 · 20/05/2021 12:02

Sorry just seen this and jumping on 🙈

@ActonBell I'm so sorry and I hope you recovered well and are doing ok!
I had a positive on the 8th May then started to bleed (4days of bleeding) assumed another chemical and have been referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic. Felt off still after the bleed so tested and over the last week I keep getting faint positives (almost shadows so part of me thinks I'm being silly and they're indents or similar but part of me is concerned) you said you got 2-3 weeks on a digital what were your line tests looking like did they get darker again? 💕

ActonBell · 20/05/2021 14:26

Hi @firsttimemummy321 and @Riah89 - when all this happened I tested positive all the way through, from the morning before the bleeding started, until it ruptured and I went into hospital. I didn’t do any more digitals after the 2-3 weeks one but my line tests continued to be clear and strong.

After the pregnancy was removed, they ask you to test in 3 weeks I think and let them know if it’s positive. I tested after 2 and still had a clear but not strong line. After 3 I tested negative.

@firsttimemummy321 - if you are still testing positive after bleeding but they’re faint positives, it’s probably the case that it’s taking time for your HcG to come down. EPU advised me not to use frers as they are so sensitive but to trust a standard pregnancy test from boots.
However, even though this is the most likely explanation, ongoing positive tests after bleeding should always be checked out, so I would ring epu again and tell them what has been happening. Don’t be put off - trust your instincts and if you think you need to be seen, insist they see you.

I’m now pregnant again and it’s not ectopic. Early days but we’re trying to stay hopeful.
