Letrozole - to take or not to take

Hello ladies, i need some advice...
We've been TTC for about 2 yrs (although at least third of those cycles were messed up by various life situations). We just had all fertility tests done and ALL WERE OK! There's nothing wrong with us, just need patience i guess.

My cycles became a bit longer this year, from 33 days on average to 35 on average. The fertility nurse said i could opt in to take Letrozole for three months, and see if it induces ovulation.
The thing is, i am ovulating (blood tests were ok and BBT shows it too), it just a few days later than i did last year on average.
I am not convinced if this is good enough reasons to start taking pills which have so many horrible side effects! I know there's many happy stories too, but i am wondering if my story is more like - if it ain't broken, dont fix it?!
Any thoughts welcomed. Thanks

Hi!!
I have PCOS so doctor recommended letrozole as it would make me ovulate more regularly.
It made me ovulate on a regular basis but unfortunately I didn't get pregnant. That was a good few months ago now and I've just had my tubes flushed and checked and I'm going to try it again for a few months before my next appointment to discuss what's next.

How long is your luteal phase?

lankyliscuits · 27/12/2020 01:30

Your circumstances sound very similar to ours. We're both 29, have been trying since August 2018 so just over 2 years and have had the unexplained infertility diagnosis. I'm currently on my third cycle if letrozole. The first month I went on 5mg & I did have some side effects - nothing major at all, the main one was headaches. My day 21 progesterone levels were ridiculously high so they said I was at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation so for month 2 I dropped down to 2.5mg dosage - no side effects. 3rd/this month I've done 2.5mg again, and have had headaches again but not as bad as when I was on the 5mg. I'm only on cycle day 13 at the moment but praying we may have conceived our Christmas miracle 🙏 Otherwise we'll be moving on to IVF x

Not sure if you were asking me how long my cycle is but kinda averages around 35 days but can vary between 60 days and 27.
We've been trying for just shy of 11 years. I have luckily not had any side effects on the lowest dosage (2.5mg) which is quite lucky. My next appointment is the start of February to discuss the next steps so think I'm going to start letrozole for this month while I'm waiting. I am due to start my period any day now so just waiting xx

So your luteal phase is from day of ovulation to day of bleed. If it's less than 10 days then issue may be with implantation.

@Mrsrielly

Sorry that was aimed at OP not you.

PCOS is a different set of issues although short luteal phase can be one of them.

Pregh · 27/12/2020 23:52

@evenmoreforthemoor my luteal phase is around 13 days, have been pretty steady.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. I've decided to wait a couple of months, keep trying naturally without any hormonal pills because they say that fertility is higher after the hsg tube test. If nothing happens until March or so, I'd give Letrozole a go. Fortunately the fertility nurse is very helpful and understanding.

This month seems to be a mess - my cycle is very long and i cant track BBT because i am recovering from covid (tested positive ten days before Christmas). I took a HCG test today, just to check, and i did get 2nd line on it but it was after the time limit...so I'll need to be patient and wait with testing for a couple of days.
Fingers crossed!
