Conception and hypothyroidism??

Hello all,

Me and my partner have been together for 3 years and for 2 of those years we have been trying to conceive but have had numerous chemical pregnancies and no luck unfortunately. After a few repeat blood tests, internal and external ultrasounds, I am being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and will start taking hormone replacement tabs. I just want to know if there is any one else who has this problem and how long it took you to conceive and if there's anything I can do to help the process?

Any advice/comment wanted - this has been such a long and emotional journey for me ConfusedConfused

Hi OP, so very sorry for your difficult journey so far. Hopefully the diagnosis will help to get a handle on things and get you closer to having your baby

It would help to know what your TSH levels were? Once normal though you should hopefully conceive quite quickly as elevated TSH is meant to really affect fertility. I'd echo the previous poster though to get your OH's SA done in the meantime just to make sure he's not part of the problem as well.

I have Hasimotos and subclinical hypothyroidism. TSH of 6 on diagnosis. I'm not sure if I had it pre pregnancy, but I have a son who I conceived easily. I've now started Levo tablets and will be retesting my TSH in the next couple of weeks to see if it's come down enough.

I echo @WoolyMammoth55. I got my test done privately and got the extended thyroid function test with free T3, T4 and antibodies. If I hadn't then it would probably have been a long until I'd have had enough symptoms to get checked.

As far as I understand it, once your levels are under control you should have no issue conceiving but you will need regular blood tests during pregnancy and potentially need to change your Levo doseage as the pregnancy progresses.

Good luck!

I also have hashimotos and was diagnosed after my DS was born 2 years ago. It took 18 months to conceive him then I was diagnosed and have been on levothyroxine since then. We started TTC number 2 in May and I got pregnant first time. It might have been a coincidence but I strongly suspect that I had undiagnosed thyroid issues before trying to have our first child which is why we found it difficult to conceive.

All this is to say that it's so so important to know your TSH level and be on the correct dosage for your condition. And if you do fall pregnant it's important to speak to your doctor about your dose immediately. I wish you the best of luck with TTC
