TTC & Covid Vaccine

Hi all,

We are am to TTC DC2 from Christmas onwards. I’ve been taking pregnacare and cutting down on alcohol and trying to improve my diet etc.

However, I work for the NHS (Not frontline) and all this talk in the media about being offered the vaccine in December is making me wonder...

Is it safe to TTC? I know it is 2 doses 3 weeks apart.

I had the flu and whooping cough vaccine in pregnancy - both are deemed safe.

However, I had a miscarriage before my DD and at my booking in appointment my bloods showed that I was not immune to Rubella (they used to screen but don’t anymore) so when I miscarried I had to have the MMR - 2 doses a few weeks apart, but was specifically told NOT to TTC for 3 months after that due to the effect of the MMR.

Has anyone read anything about this? Had any thoughts?

I feel I should add, I’m a little overweight (addressing) but no health conditions, I’m white and early 30s so based on my work risk assessment am in the lowest risk for having serious issues if I did contract Covid. But that doesn’t make it impossible... and of course pregnancy would become a concern.

I'm in exactly the same position OP. We're going to start TTC regardless in December and if I'm pregnant when they start to roll out the vaccine to NHS staff I'll just have to wait til I've delivered to have it

I was invited to a vaccine trial over the summer and told DH- it was then that he told me that he didn't want me to do it because he wanted to try for a third! It wasn't even on my radar. You have to wait at least 18 weeks after getting the 2nd jab (this was the imperial vaccine, same tech as the Pfizer one) as part of the trial.

So in the end I turned it down and started trying. I wonder what the NHS line will be about that.

Oh that’s very interesting ilookatthefloor 18 weeks is a long time....

We had earmarked Christmas in an attempt at an autumn/winter baby (just our preference)

Does it worry you polkadot? I feel a bit ungrateful that we are so lucky to be potentially offered it first, really ahead of the rest of the population but I’d be willingly refusing it...

I’m glad I found this thread, it’s nice to see other people are having the same dilemma!

We are planning on TTC our first baby from December/January but I’m also a frontline NHS worker and I’m feeling nervous about the impact a vaccine might have on this.

Part of me feels like the responsible thing to do would be to wait until after having the vaccine. But as PP said, the wait following could be long and I don’t know how willing I am to wait. My husband thinks we should continue to try as planned.

I’m hoping by the end of December/January we’ll have more information about it all to help me make a decision.

I am in the same position. Frontline NHS worker, I am going to be declining as there will be no hard evidence if it may have an affect on a fetus. It would take a lot to persuade me to have it. I haven't read anything about it yet but am sure I will soon as I am a midwife but nothing has been made available to us yet, but keep an eye on the RCOG guidelines as they will update them as soon as they have information. I would like to think they won't give it if it is unsafe but they thought Thalidomide was safe too!

Randomness12 · 13/11/2020 10:24

That’s true 00deed there won’t be any testing or longer term impacts known. Are you all trying for your first?

This will potentially be my second, and I think I’m extra worried I think as pregnancy surprises the immune system so if I caught it while pregnant and something terrible happened to me - what about my DD? Is it selfish of me not to have it?

I’m very lucky in that as I’m not front line I’m wfh about 3 days a week of 5 but I’d be on site. I don’t work near patients but do work with/interact with clinical staff probably weekly so I’m concerned about the potential infection risk.

I’ve read that there are 3 types, one which is the new technology (the Pfizer one) and another two which use existing technology which is the same that is used in the annual flu vaccine - and therefore no waiting and no expected impact on pregnancy. But of course, no testing on pregnant women.

I don’t think pregnancy surprises the immune system 😂 I meant suppresses!

I was invited to do a trial and when I was filling out the forms online I got stopped at the question 'are you trying to conceive or planning to within the next year' so that's why I didn't!

@Randomness12 This would be number 2 for us aswell. Have a 6yo and also a 9yo DSD who lives with us fulltime and doesn't see his mum so is with us 24/7.

I think we all had it back in April before testing became widespread and had nearly 4 weeks off due to overlaps and my youngest was quite ill, ended up in A&E twice on IV meds and had all the symptoms, chest xray abnormal, bloods correlate with Covid but just no test as wasn't admitted. So I do feel that if I could reduce the risk then maybe I should but at the same time if they are at school they are probably at more risk than I am actually caring for Covid patients with all appropriate PPE.

We have been 'trying' for 10 months now but not 'properly' trying as I did that last time and caused so much stress that I lost the plot a bit and it took 14 months so just letting nature take its course this time so I would hate to stop trying now and start on contraception which I would need my body to get used to being off all over again.

Just so hard to know what to do for the best. I think I will wait until it actually gets rolled out and get more facts about it.

Randomness12 · 13/11/2020 20:41

That’s useful to know Becky thank you.

I think we will just have to wait until they decide which one - if any - is being rolled out and go from there.

Useful to know I’m not hugely over reacting by thinking about this now though.
