BFP then a BFN - missed miscarriage?

Hi,

I have just recently posted a thread called 'Longest period ever....' I was concerned because I had what I thought was a period from 22nd Sept (I was due on), then I had a 2-3 day break and then I started bleeding again from 1st Oct. I have stopped now but on Tuesday I did a test and I got a BFP. The morning sickness also started from Monday morning onwards and so I started to believe I was pregnant but that there was a problem. So due to the bleeding I got straight onto the Docs, made an appointment and the doc refered me to antenatal.

A midwife called me yesterday and she seemed really sceptical and was like 'you had your period on 22nd Sept and you think you're pregnant?' 'Have you done a test and are you sure you're pregnant?' I explained the detail .i.e. I've been bleeding for about 18 days! So she said she would speak to the consultant and get back to me.

All this really made me doubt myself and so I did another test last night. It came back a BFN, so I did another one and it was BFN!

The midwife called again this morning after speaking to the consultant and they have booked me in for a scan on tuesday morning.

I feel so silly now, was I ever pregnant? Is it really worth me even wasting their time having a scan?

I just feel so stupid and useless

Any advice is welcome...

FT

Sorry you are going throught this.

What kind of test was it that you used? Was the result definitely read within the time limit? Was the line the same colour as the control line? How stroing was the line/how fast did it appear?

How long has it been between BFP and BFN?

It may be that Sept 22 bleed was not a period. If your previous period was actually your period and you got PG during that cycle, how pregnant would that make you? About six weeks?

pixie04 · 12/10/2007 12:08

I'm so sorry to hear what your going through. If you got a BFP then you would have been pregnant. You just don't get false negatives. However if you've been bleeding a lot and your now getting a BFN then it does sound like you've MC'd. Its well worth going for the scan to check whether there is anything there or not and if you have MC'd you may need a D & C. Its probably best to stick with the docs and let them keep an eye on you to make sure all is okay. Again I'm so so sorry for what you are having to go through. And ignore that studpid midwive she sound evil don't let her make you feel bad you need to look after your own health if you've MC'd then you need to make sure all is sorted so you don't have future problems ttc.

pixie04 · 12/10/2007 12:11

sorry meant to say at the start of that thread that you just don't get false positives not false negatives.

Flumpytigger · 12/10/2007 12:12

Thanks nh101.

The test I used first was a superdrugs own brand. The line was faint but clear, if that makes sense. It was also a little lighter than the control line. The result came up almost instantly and the test said it was as accurate as any doctors test. I was defo pregnant according to that test.

The second BFN test was a Clear Blue and the third BFN was another Superdrug one.

I did the first test on Tuesday morning and the other 2 tests last night.

My last period before 22nd Sept started on 9th August and so I think that would make me 9 weeks.

Flumpy, yes they are as good as doc's tests, and that definitely sounds like a BFP - you can't get a false positive as Pixie says. But as the tests are now showing BFN perhaps your BFP was just showing the last of the hcg in your system, if you in fact were pregnant and have Mc'd. 18 days of bleeding seems like a lot though for such an early MC. You must keep that scan appt and get everything checked out. I'm so sorry - were you trying to conceive?

Flumpytigger · 12/10/2007 13:15

Yes we were ttc. I lost my first little boy at 25 weeks in February due to a non-genetic heart defect and now it seems I've lost another baby.

I just feel so useless and hopeless. I'm just dreading Tuesday's scan, going in and reliving all the old memories, just to be told bad news all over again.

I feel like someone up there has it in for me I really do...

Huge hugs Flummytiger > again so sorry that your going through this, I've always been told though that your supposed to use your first morning urine to do tests although they can be used any time of the day your first morning wee is the most concentrated.

I wouldn't want to get your hopes up as 18 days of bleeding isn't a good sign although bleeding in early pregnancy isn't uncommon. As horrible as it is, think of the worse case senario and then anything better will be easier to deal with. IYSWIM

My thoughts are with you xxx (as cheesey as that probably sounds)

nh101 · 12/10/2007 13:33

Oh Flumpy that's terrible. I had a MC in March at 13 weeks and am now six weeks PG again so I can understand what you are going through. I had a bit of pink CM this week and thought it was all over - I was distraught, much more upset than the last MC.

I can also understand the thought that someone has it in for you. But you have to hold on to the belief that one day you will have a baby. You can get pregnant which a lot of people can't do and the two MCs (if you have had a MC) don't seem related to each other, they haven;t happened for the same reason. So t he likelihood that you will go on to have a healthy baby is high..

Try the TTc after MC thread - all the ladies on there are fabulous and will know exactly what you are going through

Thanks Pixie04 I appreciate your thoughts (cheesey or not)

I have resided myself to the fact that I have miscarried, like you say, if I prepare for the worst case then hopefully I will be able to deal with the eventuall outcome a little easier.

I've had no pain so I am hopeing that miscarriage is worst case and not an ep or anything. The loss of two babies (especially how far gone I was with my first angel) is enough to cope with, I don't know what I'd do if my future ttc chances were affected

I'm so sorry for your loss in March nh101, at least I can take comfort that there is still hope for me and I wish you every positive good and happy vibe for your little bean.

I normally lurk on a lot of different threads, so will defo pop in, thanks for the recommendation.

paulaplumpbottom · 01/11/2007 10:19

I don't have any advice but I am sorry for your situation.

Flumpytigger · 02/11/2007 09:50

Hi,

Well after a scan and blood tests the consultant confirmed that it was more than likely to be a missed miscarriage because my hormone levels had dropped between blood tests.

She also noted that I've got a cyst on one of my ovaries - just to knock a girl when she's down

Apparently it's really common for women to have cysts and so she's told me that it's of no major concern.

I've already had a period since and so I'm back on the old ttc bandwagon again.
The loss of a baby at 25 weeks and now one at about 3-4 weeks - I can't help asking myself if it's really meant to be

Meanwhile I'm having to feign happiness at the prospect of becoming an aunty for a second time, to my brother in law's twins

Thanks for checking in to see how I'm doing....

xx
