Can Menopause cause positive pregnancy results?

Hi, does anyone know or have experience of getting positive results on pregnancy tests which was caused by menopausal hormonal changes?
I posted on here months ago as I had been getting faint positives on a range of tests, mostly FRER but was confirmed by GP bloods that I wasn't pregnant. I pushed it to the back of my mind but for some reason, curiosity maybe, I tested again yesterday and I got a similar line. The frer came in a two pack, I dipped the second in tap water and it was totally clear.
I am in my early forties and am wondering if it's menopause related now.
Thanks for reading.
I'll post a pic of my test

Well it definitely looks positive. I have no idea if menopause can cause positives, I can't imagine they do because the test is picking up hCG but who knows.

Could you be pregnant? Are you trying? Do you have any idea how many DPO you are?

I've not got any personal experience of this, but I just googled it and it does seem to be a reasonably common occurrence.

I suppose the easiest way to distinguish between a positive test vs menopause is to look at any symptoms you may have that are unique to menopause. And also to retest a few days later. In a healthy pregnancy, the line would be noticeably darker after a few days, whereas if it was a hormonal change due to menopause it would stay reasonably similar.

kirinm · 11/10/2020 15:54

I've never heard of that! But what a mind fuck. Are you trying to conceive OP?

daisychain1620 · 11/10/2020 15:54

Thanks for the responses, I've been busy googling! It does look positive though doesn't it? These are the same as the lines I was getting back in June and I did quite a few tests. I put them down to faulty batches but surely I'd be very unlikely to be still testing from a faulty batch.
I'll test again in a few days but I think my HCG levels must be slightly raised for some reason and I don't think I'm pregnant (I'm on the mini pill) so I doubt the line will get darker. I think a trip to the gp will be called for.
I was just hoping to hear from someone else who had experienced this or knew if anyone in the same situation.x

@kirinm yes a total mind fuck lol. I was convinced in June I was pregnant and had a shock of all shocks (we're not try to conceive and have two teens.) I did test after test showing lines some of which were a bit darker than the pics I've just shared. I got used to the idea of a little addition to the family but then nothing. Emotional rollercoaster to say the least. I have accepted based on last time I'm sure I'm not pregnant but don't know what's going on

Yes natural HCG levels can increase closer towards menopause- not everyone has a base level of 0 - for some women It can be closer to 5. First response can so sensitive that they can literally pick up ANY level of hcg in the body hence why you might be getting positive lines

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/10/2020 16:03

When I was about 48 my periods stopped for awhile - I thought it was menopause but took a pregnancy test just in case and ended up with positive results just like yours.😱

Started freaking out especially as partner has had a vasectomy!

Went to doctors turns out it was menopause, no pregnancy thank goodness, and is totally normal and yes it’s hormone related. I had no idea this could happen.

Hailtomyteeth · 11/10/2020 16:07

My great-grandma thought she was menopausal in 1908. Turned out to be my gran.

daisychain1620 · 11/10/2020 16:09

Its just such a shock and emotionally draining when you have no idea and just think it must be a pregnancy! I've stupidly got a little spark of hope even though I shouldn't really but I'm also more realistic this time. I'll phone the gp this week to get checked over

If you pick up a less sensitive test that might confirm it?
daisychain1620 · 11/10/2020 16:16

Yes I think that is a good idea, thank you

Mine was a cheapo Wilkos test and it still showed a positive. Like I said up thread I wasn’t pregnant just perimenopausal 😫

Were you still having periods and ovulating? That is a seriously cruel thing for the body to do!
daisychain1620 · 11/10/2020 18:21

@IDoAllMyOwnStunts thank you for sharing your experience. Its great to hear from someone who has gone through this, I can confidently suggest this to the gp. The last time I was getting tests by the health clinic I did ask them if they could suggest why the tests were showing as positive but they put it down to dodgy tests.

No my period had stopped for a couple of months so that’s why I did the pregnancy test.

Like I say it would’ve been difficult one to explain to my partner who had a vasectomy 20 years ago!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 11/10/2020 18:45

Turns out my hormones were all over the place. My periods did stop for about nine months then they came back with a vengeance, heavy bleeding et cetera.

I ended up on norethisterone for a year and then eventually had the merina coil put in so no periods at all now. Best thing ever. I’m 50 now.

daisychain1620 · 11/10/2020 19:05

I thought with me being on the mini pill my hormones should be balanced out? So weird. I used to have the Mirena coil about 10yrs ago and thought it was fab. Maybe I should get it again
